#the keys to the kingdom

LIVE

Larklight/Philip Reeve, illustrated by David Wyatt

The villains in this book are there almost from the beginning but it isn’t until halfway through that they are revealed as the villains. It’s hard to explain why I love them without revealing too much but, in short, they are the perfect combination of freaky and hilarious to me.

The Keys to the Kingdom series/Garth Nix

The villains in this series are a combination of the days of the week and the Christian Seven Deadly Sins, which is just a really fun concept.

Dark Lord of Derkholm/Diana Wynne Jones

This year the Wizard Derk has been chosen to play the Dark Lord for Mr. Chesney’s Tours. Mr. Chesney arranges tourists to come to Derkholm from another world every year, getting rich in the process but leaving Derkholm off badly.

The Hunger Games/Suzanne Collins

I love all the villains in this series, but one of my favorites is Effie Trinket, the lottery randomizer. She’s is so sweet and nice on the surface and, like her clothing, it is all just a sugary coating for the rot that she is.

Neverwhere/Neil Gaiman

Like Larklight, Neverwhere has something of a twist villain, though this villain is less obvious, imo, and the reveal is kept for the very end. That works with the story, which is more of a journey than a battle, and the twist is awesome.
