Finding Joel’s Rodeo cowboy in Ellie’s and Dina’s house won’t leave me alone.

Chapter 10 - Big Creek Day 39

Title: In Every Home a Heartache

Rating:E

Fandom: The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption 2

Genre: Tlou2 fix-it, slow burn

Warning: canon-typical violence

Relationships: Joel&Ellie, Joel/Arthur

Joel was moody. Ever since that first evening in the pub when he and Arthur had their ridiculous and utterly annoying giggle fit, Joel seemed pissed. It was like the first couple of days when Arthur had just joined them. Joel was unnecessarily rude and abrasive towards him.

Ellie had no idea what had gotten his shorts in a knot. She just knew that it was getting on her nerves. A lot. Arthur on the other hand just seemed mildly confused by it.

If this had happened earlier, Ellie would have assumed that the threatening incident in Kennewick to be the reason for that, when Arthur had suspected they might be part of this WLF militia, but to her own surprise Joel had seemed to have forgotten about it rather quickly. Maybe because Arthur had been right: Joel would have done the same thing, had it been about her or Tommy. Hell, he had done the same right after meeting Arthur and had paid him back in Kennewick almost immediately.

Something had definitely changed since the pub. And Ellie couldn’t figure out what the hell that was.

Behind him, Arthur snorted at that for some reason, followed by a low laugh. Followed by a… giggle?

“You’ve got red on you.”

Joel almost couldn’t understand what he was saying amidst his giggling.

Joel turned away from inspecting Ellie’s shoes again to look at Arthur leaning against the bar.

Arthur was…. apparently losing it. He was slightly shaking with laughter like he was suppressing it. Or trying to and visibly failing.

“What?” Ellie asked.

“You’ve got red on you.” Arthur recurred and pointed at Ellie. At the drying blood stains splattered on her face and shirt and the cricket bat lying on the floor. Her face was a picture of irritated and tired confusion.

He’s officially lost it, was what went through Joel’s head, as Ellie just stared at Arthur blankly who had nothing so much sunken to the floor, giggling. Giggling. Shaking with laughter over some inside joke.

Arthur had always been a good observer. There wasn’t much he prided himself in, but he had always been good at watching people, at least since his ma died that was and he had to constantly walk on eggshells around Lyle because the smallest thing was liable to set him off. It was what had made him a decent thief - at least so he thought until he tried to steal Dutch’s Porsche and got his ass caught. It was why Hosea had liked to keep him around on jobs despite his better judgement.

Knowing folk was what kept you alive as much as a functioning rifle did.

He sure as hell wasn’t the brightest.

But he was a good observer.

It was this talent that made him sense something was off even before the gang’s hideout, formerly a hotel, came into sight.

There was something missing from the town.
