Me, the entire time reading this:

I’m a sucker for angst - love it. I’m also a sucker for sometimes seeing the not-so-pleasant side of life because, unfortunately, not everything is always sunshine and rainbows, and not every problem can be fixed. And you absolutely delivered on both.

This was great!

Thank you so much for reading and sharing

It was that easy.

It shouldn’t have been.

It wasn’t.

Why kid themselves?

Just a quick signature in the end.

Two, really.

In the end, it was His and Hers.

Just as in the beginning.

The pen stopped at the end of her last name, her fingers fidgeting, fighting the muscle memory of the last four years. No longer hers hyphen his, just hers, as it had in beginning.

This was the end of them.

Blinking away tears that threaten to fall, Tessa focused on the black ink that had begun to dry at the bottom of the page. The ball of the pen still on the dotted line, holding onto the papers as if that would stop this from happening.

They had been trying to figure out what was best for them for over a year, and after all the talks, the therapy sessions, the romantic gateways, they tried everything. In the end this had become their best outcome.

They tried.

After what they had been through together, neither of them would have imagined they would be here. And yet here they were sitting across from each other, their lawyers at their sides.

The first memory of them coming to her, mixing with their final moment. One more thing they would experience together.

He had never forgotten the first time he met here. Taken aback by her… everything about her, he tried his best to be the mentor she needed. Until one day, he couldn’t. She had brought out a side to him that even he didn’t know he was capable of having.

“Tess.” Ethan whispered out his wife’s name.

He had been holding his breath as he watched her, hurting like hell seeing how easily she signed her name at the bottom of the page.

Tessa looked up at the sound of her name, catching those blue eyes that belonged to the man she fell in love with staring at her. She gripped the papers that still sit in front of her, before softly pushing the papers across the table towards Ethan. Her lawyer’s hand gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, offering her a silent form of support.

She couldn’t watch what would seal the fate of their relationship. But she couldn’t look away, eyes darting to his hand, to the hand that once held the ring she placed five years ago… it rests bare on the table, just as hers did. Her eyes following as Ethan’s name glided so effortlessly on the page.

That was it.

The gossip Ethan had heard, knowing she had heard them as well, making its rounds through the hospital. That the mistake that was made had been that they dove into this too fast. Four years of marriage surely was proof that this wasn’t a spur of the moment thing. Even the years before he asked her to be his wife, it was more of a slow burn, at least on his part.

They loved each other hard, friends would say they became addicted to each other. How it had become the sweetest drug they both had ever tasted.

Had they both been foolish?

They had fallen in love. Yes, some would say it had been foolish. There were songs about it.

Their love had burned bright and now all Ethan could see were dying embers. Not fully extinguished because he knew he would always love her and she him.

She watched as Ethan sat still, just has she had been moments ago. Wondering what was going through his mind. Was he thinking that same things she was?

“Ethan?” Tessa called out to her soon to be ex-husband.

“No need to worry about anything else, Dr. Martinez. Dr. Ramsey’s lawyer and I will handle everything from here on out.” Her lawyer murmured as she watched his lawyer shake his head in agreement.

“I’ll escort you out Dr. Ramsey.” Ethan heard his lawyer tell him as he grabbed the divorce papers from him. “We’ll send you a copy.” His lawyer motioned across the table.

Pushing out his chair, Ethan began to make his way out of the conference room. Turning back, he wanted to get one final look at her before she went off to her new life across the country. He was happy for her, but instead of seeing her brown eyes looking back at him, her back was to him listening to what her lawyer was whispering to her.

Tessa only heard the soft click of the door close behind him. The one thing she couldn’t do was watch him walk out, so she turned her back and had been trying to pay attention to what was being said to her.

“What happens now?” She asks.

“Once the paperwork gets filed, four months maybe less everything will be finalized. You wouldn’t have to worry about anything, my office will keep you updated with everything.”

“There wouldn’t be any issues…”

“No, of course not. You moving out of state, for a job of a lifetime I may add, it won’t cause any issues. This is uncontested.”

“Ok. Thank you.” Tessa gave her a weak smile.

“You may have heard this countless times —”

“When it comes to advice and such..I..I think I may have heard it all.” She says.

“Yeah, maybe this one probably the most. Maybe there is some truth to it, but some say it it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.” Tessa’s lawyer tells her.

On the other side of the door, “Yeah, heard that one too.” Ethan responds to the same saying his lawyer just made. Not knowing his wife, soonto beex-wife, heard the same thing.

“It was a mutual agreement remember Dr. Martinez. You both-“

“Came to the best decision for us.” Tessa finishes the sentence. “But it doesn’t make it hurt any less.”

“I can only imagine. We could head out now if you like.”

“May I just have a quick moment alone?”

“Of course, Whatever you need. I’ll see you outside, Doctor.”

Tessa stands watching as her lawyer makes her way out. Taking a deep breath in and out, looking at the chair were Ethan sat moments ago. The final place where they had walked in as the Ramsey’s.

“We all make mistakes and in the end, life tends to work itself out. The game of love humanizes us, even doctors.” Her lawyer calls out before letting the door close after her.

Shaking her head, Tessa didn’t want to believe that, she wanted to believe deep down that Ethan didn’t think that. Had they been a mistake?

What they were doing now a mistake? That thought ran through her mind plenty of times, surely they could work it out.

In the end they had tried countless amount of times, no matter how many they did, it would lead them back to this.

Straightening her shoulders back, with her head held high she made her way out of the room. Walking out, she turned the corner, coming to stop at what or rather who she saw.

He begun to reach for her, but quickly stopped himself. He wanted to say everything that he had been holding back. He couldn’t. Those words he wanted to say sat on the tip of his tongue. The woman that he had fallen madly in love with stood in front of him, for what he knew would be the last time.

Ethan saw all the memories that they had created etched in her eyes. Before turning and making his exit from her life, he told her the only thing he would let his heart say.

You-” He cleared his throat before it could crack. “— we were never a mistake Rookie.”
