I have a bit of a pet peeve in the way modern productions discuss historical queens who were foreigners in their host countries.

Like for example with The Serpent Queen they describe Catherine de Medici as “Considered an immigrant, common and plain,” and I’m pretty sure they played up the whole “she was an immigrant and had an immigrant’s struggle” thing for Catherine of Aragon in The Spanish Princess too because I remember being pissed off about it.

And it’s like … yeah by technical definition they were immigrants but pleaselets not kid ourselves into thinking these women were treated in anyway similar to how immigrants are treated today. Or in their own times for that matter! Let’s not pretend that their struggles are in any way comparable to the trials and tribulations of the common immigrant. These women had an insaneamount of privilege and their power was only possible due to the suppression of lower classes. This creation of a false equivilancy between historical royal princesses and modern immigrants in an attempt at making them seem “relatable” and “woke” for marketing is at best cringe and tone-deaf and at worse downright offensive.
