The Serpent’s House // Chapter Sixteen

The train doors slid open with a hiss, and Aziraphale walked into the basement of Heaven’s Gate. 

It felt odd, being back. Before Tadfield, Aziraphale had found the anonymity of the office building almost comforting, but now it was strange to look around the elevator and find twenty faces he’d never seen before (or perhaps had seen but hadn’t bothered to remember). Everyone was occupied with something, some listening to music, some staring at their shoes and pretending to be invisible. 

Aziraphale had felt safe here once, in this stainless steel corporate hell. He didn’t anymore.

The Serpent’s House // Chapter Fifteen

Aziraphale tugged the covers up and tucked them under Wensley’s chin. Wensley was watching him, green eyes wide and thoughtful.

“Goodnight, then, my dear,” Aziraphale said softly. He brushed a piece of Wensley’s hair off of his forehead, tucking it back where it belonged.

“Goodnight, Mister Fell,” said Wensley. “Are you gonna be here when I wake up?”

“No, I’m afraid I won’t be.”

“Oh,” said Wensley.
