Just having Triumvirate feels about the symbolism in their relationship via the choice of Jim’s birthday presents in Wrath of Khan:
Spock gives Jim a book full of knowledge, and Bones gives him reading glasses so he can focus on the individual words.
(and Romulan ale, but that’s another story)
Spock gives Jim a book, and Bones gives him a lens so he can read it.
Spock gives Jim a book about the past, and Bones gives him glasses and a lecture on how to see the future.
Spock dies and gives them the volume of knowledge on how to get him back. Bones is the focusing agent that lets it happen.
