Bestie help, why did they change Jamil’s Snake Whisper to Snake Charmer?
I can get behind the change to Trey’s UM since it makes for a more obvious Alice in Wonderland reference while staying true to the nature of the UM and Trey’s character, but Snake Charmer?
The ‘whisper’ in Snake Whisper alludes to Jamil’s secretive nature. Jamil’s UM is meant to hypnotize you, but he uses it in such a way that he would not draw suspicion towards himself when he uses it. He aims to quietly make you do his bidding so that he can accomplish his goals without anyone knowing who is behind it.
SnakeCharmer takes away that core part of his character. It implies Jamil being a more flirtatious character, when he isn’t like that. You can argue that the word 'charmer’ is used in its more magical denotation, but the connotation of charmer for many people is more on the attractiveness of something or someone. If people hear the word charmer, it’s more likely that they’d think along the lines of Prince Charming than magical spells being cast on them and spellbinding them. Furthermore, 'charmer’ has the worrisome connotation of sounding exotic and orientalist. Probably the main reason why they changed it from whisper to charmer was to allude more to the Jafar inspiration, which also dismisses a core part of Jamil’s character, and as many of you know, Aladdin had several issues.
Twst EN has been good at putting thought into a lot of things that they translated/localized. However, the localization of Snake Whisper to Snake Charmer makes little sense in relation to Jamil’s character and can be perceived poorly.
i love how the life series soulmates update has distracted us all completely from the fact that the only enchanter this season is located in the deep dark. you’d better enjoy your happy couples while they last because i have a feeling we’re going to be losing a few to the warden.
