Dani has finally stopped crying, and though her legs are numb and her back is aching, Jamie continues to hold on. Six tries. Six attempts at bringing new life into the world. Hopeful beginnings dashed by bitter endings, each an apocalypse of their own, until nothing remained but an unfathomable emptiness. Fresh tears slide down Jamie’s cheek, and Dani must sense it, because she stirs, and gently wipes the tears from her face. They sit in the silence of their flat, and cradle their dream of a child between them one last time, before drifting off into a restless sleep.
