LIVE

It’s a huge problem. These are races offering hundreds of thousands of dollars in purses. If I had the money I would buy horses just to enter in stakes races. Even if they finish last they get tens of thousands.

It’s Preakness Day!

For the second leg of this year’s Triple Crown races, we are re-reading another one of Mom’s Marguerite Henry books.  Black Gold tells the true story of a small but big-hearted horse who won the Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby.  What an inspiring story!

For today’s race, we are cheering for Secret Oath to become the seventh filly to win the Preakness Stakes, after Swiss Skydiver two years ago!  We are also rooting for Skippylongstocking because who wouldn’t root for that name!

It’s Derby Day!

As a little girl, Mom loved reading Marguerite Henry’s books about horses.  One of Mom’s favorites was King of the Wind.  The book tells the story of a colt named Sham “the Sun” who persevered through hardship to become one of the founding stallions of the modern thoroughbred.  This book is what started Mom’s interest in horse racing!

Mom and I already watched the 3rd annual Kentucky Turtle Derby together this afternoon.  For the first time, the Kentucky Turtle Derby included multiple shell species, including my own!

For the 148th Kentucky Derby, our bet is on morning-line favorite Zandon, but we will also be watching undefeated Taiba, and don’t forget about current betting favorite Epicenter.    Picking a winner this year is like trying to pick my favorite dandie:  This should be one of the most competitive Derbys in years, full of talent and heart-tugging stories!  (Plus, of course, the ban of famed trainer Bob Baffert everyone can’t stop talking about.)    We will also be rooting for Smile Happy in lucky post 5 (who wouldn’t love that name!), Crown Pride with the prancing warm-up routine, and White Abarrio for Mom’s soft spot for grays.  We can’t wait to see what happens!

It’s Belmont Day!

One of the very first novels Mom ever read was the classic Black Beauty.  This copy was a gift from Mom’s first grade teacher!  Beyond telling the tale of a beautiful horse, Black Beauty emphasizes kindness, sympathy, and respect, values which Mom has tried to live up to all her life.

Respect is certainly due to all the talented horses racing today in the Test of the Champion.  After sitting out the Preakness, surprise Derby winner Rich Strike returns to the Triple Crown circuit today!  This time, Rich Strike is very much on everyone’s radar as one of the favorites, together with We the People and Mo Denegal.  The longer distance of today’s race suits Rich Strike, but if you ask us, don’t count out filly Nest from the leaderboard!  Of course, we will once again also be cheering for the amazingly named Skippylongstocking!

Pssst … did anyone else notice grays make up 25% of the eight-horse field today?!
