white people need to start raising content creators who are poc instead of writing our stories for us. like either do your damn research or don’t write the story. i constantly see white people trying to have “representation” and 90% of the time they’re caricatures of what a poc is.

white people consistently gravitating towards another white person telling the story of a brown person and giving themselves a pat on the back for basically telling their white experience through a brown mouth. white people, please understand yall are part of the problem and you need to be conscious of the work you’re consuming and making.

then there’s poc content creators giving accurate deep portrayals of their experience who get little to no exposure and who’s legitimate stories get swept under the rug.

this is about latinx, indigenous, black, mixed, asian, and other racial/ethnic minorities (espeically those who are disabled and/or lgbtq+)

it’s really telling when a white people scrolls past this, so reblog. ask questions. start a dialogue dont just ignore and act like you’re the exception to this.

Let’s talk about the astounding similarities between cats and autistic people, and how we should make them the official autism mascot instead of that godawful puzzle piece

Oh man, now you’ve got me going!

Firstly, cats stim. They purr, swish their tails and knead their paws against pillows, blankets, and other soft things. Many cats actively seek out sensory experiences, like listening to birds singing, lying in a sunbeam, rolling against the grass, etc.

Cats have sensory sensitivities— many of them dislike walking on certain flooring, touching certain textures, and certain smells or sounds may make them anxious. Their fur is very sensitive, they can sense the lightest touch, or speck of lint, or dust and their skin will quiver until they can lick or rub it off. When they become overstimulated cats retreat into a small, dark place to recover.

Cats love routine. Many cats know the exact time that their owners wake up in the morning and will wake them. A cat with a routine is a happy cat— they love to have their meals or soft food on a schedule and will learn their owner’s schedule. Cats will become anxious when the schedule is disrupted or if their owner doesn’t follow their usual routine.

In the same vein cats are very wary and/or anxious when it comes to the introduction of new things or people into their environment. Cats require time and patience to get used to anything or anyone newly introduced. Cats also feel anxious when existing furniture is rearranged or when a new smell (like an air freshener) is introduced into the home.

Cats often have “special interests”, a particular activity or thing that they love and can spend hours enjoying. It could be playing with a particular toy, chewing on something, listening to the radio, or watching the clothes in the washing machine. My cat Kitty has a certain ball that she fixates on and will happily enjoy and obsess over for hours.

Finally, cats have a very distinct and subtle body language. The difference is particularly evident when compared with the exuberant, unsubtle dog. The slightest twitch of a tail or turn of the ears, the frequency and timing of blinks, and the positioning of the tail in relation to the body are all little movements that can express much. To the untrained eye it may appear as if a cat is bored, aloof, or unaware of its surroundings. But once you learn to recognize cat body language and understand cat communication, you’ll be amazed at the depth of emotion and how expressive your cat really is.

Yes, I think that cats have a lot in common with autistic people. And that’s wonderful!

also can I add to this:

cats like to show their affection just by sharing the same space. a cat will generally want to be in the same space as you, even if you’re not really interacting and are half way across the room. still hanging out!

they don’t always want to be touched, and can be easily overstimulated by physical affection.

they don’t like to make eye contact.

their body language is often misinterpreted- and then they are blamed for it, or have negative motivations ascribed to it. a cat following you around is stalking you instead of wanting to hang out. a cat that doesn’t want to make eye contact with you is ignoring you instead of being polite. a cat that lashes out because it’s over stimulated, or you ignored their body language telling you to leave them alone is suddenly an asshole who hurt you for no reason.

I had this book as a child and I’m glad to see the comparison is so widely recognized too

I KEEP SAYING ALL CATS ARE AUTISTIC IM SO HAPPY THIS POST EXISTS PLEASE SOMEONE ARTISTIC MAKE A CAT WITH THE NEURODIVERGENT SYMBOL ON IT FOR AUTISM MASCOT :D

Idk why but villains with standards will always be the funniest thing to me. like you’ll get someone who will take absolute pleasure in doing the most vile things but paying their minions less than minimum wage? how dare you insult their honor. there’ll be a guy who just loves terrorizing people but if you say something sexist about his sidekick he’ll punch you in the throat and step aside with glee to let her pummel you. villains who are like “murder is fine generally but if you’re a homophobe then I’ll tie you to a boulder and catapult you into the ocean”. Idk there’s just something innately hilarious about a villain who is very definitively bad, like extremely morally reprehensible, but like there are just certain things that even they won’t stoop to, thereby implying that those who do are worse

It’s especially funny when their limits are bizarre or mundane, like villains who are OK with murder, but who draw the line at leaving a shopping cart in the middle of a parking space.

For those who have trouble reading that:

Imagine being a black, gay drag queen in the 1800s after being born into enslavement AND having the style and cachè to throw soirées that the girls had to come to! That’s why I don’t want to hear this “we’re not our ancestors stuff.”
You’re right!

From The Very Black Project Page- William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a “queen of drag”. Imagine the queenery of this icon.

He was a slave in Hancock, Maryland and was freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, he organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. He called himself the “queen of drag”. Most of the attendees his gatherings were men who were former slaves, and were gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses.
William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, he was falsely convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for “keeping a disorderly house” (running a brothel). After his sentencing, he requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but but he was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ community’s right to gather.

He was known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two men who had also both been slaves and who formed the first known male same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans.

When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, his brother continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of his brothers had also been active participants in his drag balls.

Imagine how intelligent and ambitious this man had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts he had to unlearn by himself to be a confident gay black man who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous he had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s!

William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. Tell his story!

As a gender nonconforming cis dyke, I’ve received a lot of weird hostility in bathrooms. Like, a lot. The mild but frequent stuff is when people see me, do a visible double take, and go check the sign again. The not entirely common, more aggressive stuff is when people verbally question why I’m there. More than once I’ve had someone call me “it” or confront me about my gender in public settings. I’ve had people try to tell me to leave.

But the only place I’ve had someone physically try to remove me from a bathroom was in London.

Some random middle aged woman thought that she had the right to put her hands on me simply because I don’t match her ideas of what femininity is, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this happened in a place where transphobia is running rampant. Of all the weird stuff that’s happened to me in pretty conservative parts of the US, they simply are not as emboldened here as they currently are in the UK; but don’t think for a moment that they don’t intend to get there.

Trans people are reason enough to fight these bigots. It’s a good enough reason. Trans people deserve respect, dignity, compassion, and protection. But if you think they’ll be satisfied with only pushing trans people back into the closet, you’re utterly deluded. They want absolute conformity, simple as that, and they’re increasing their push here too.

Any lesbian who aligns herself with transphobia is a traitor. Simple as that.

fantastic

Simply because the link about the gender neutral pronoun “thon” leads to a google books page (gross) in Portuguese, it may not prove particularly useful for English speakers. Instead, here’s a link to a Merriam-Webster post about it. While they don’t have links to their sources, they do include all the titles to the publications referenced, most of which are surely public domain.

In addition, if “thon” (or “þon,” for any literary nerds) doesn’t suit you, here is a list of proposed gender neutral pronouns regardless of whether or not they have seen usage.

It even has usage notes! Please DM me if the links don’t work.

That’s because that picture was taken at what is known in its native language as Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, it is the place where the first trans healthcare was developed, where the term transsexual was coined.

Do you want to know what happened to the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft?

It was the victim of the very first Nazi book burning. Their teachings were outlawed and their books destroyed. Their leaders - such as Magnus Hirschfeld - were criminalized and exiled, if not outright murdered.

The fascists exterminated not just a generation of trans people, but they erased our history from the books almost entirely. It took us almost a century to get back to where we are now.

We’ve always been here, but our future is not guaranteed. We have to fight for our survival, because it’s happening again.

  • why caffeine works for some of us, but not all, and even then it often depends on the way you take it and the dosage
  • how come all of us have gastrointestinal problems?
  • addendum to the above: what exactly are our gastrointestinal problems? are we genetically more likely to have autism be comorbid with gluten sensitivity/colitis/IBS/lactose intolerance/whatever else or is it something completely different? is it psychosomatic? the fuck
  • okay but how does being sensory-seeking work. and what does stimming do to your brain. what neurological function are we facilitating with flapping hands and rocking back and forth and spinning? wouldn’t it be great if we had a serious long-term study of the brain on stimming?
  • are you more likely to be autistic and LGBT?
  • what are things we do better than neurotypicals?

but no it’s always “how do we train the animals to be something they’re not” or “but what made you this way??” or “Time To Find A Cure”

  • why do we all have sleep disorders
  • what’s up with the joint problems
  • and the faceblindness
  • what are the communication patterns here? how come I can meet one autistic person and immediately grok how they communicate, and be confused by another, but all neurotypicals are confusing? what’s going on with that?
  • how much of what we currently recognise as ‘autistic symptoms’ are actually ptsd symptoms? or autistic ptsd symptoms?

ALL. OF. THIS.

OK, so I decided to check out which of these had been researched and what they found.

Caffeine - not much, but this study looks interesting. It suggests that if you’re not a regular caffeine consumer, caffeine might temporarily make you act less autistic.

Oh, hey, this study has a potential answer to both caffeine response and sleep problems! There’s apparently an enzyme that affects both caffeine and melatonin metabolism.

GI issues-this study didn’t find a link. The rate of GI issues was 9% for both autistic and NT children. The most common GI issues for both groups were food intolerance, usually lactose intolerance.

This study found a much higher prevalence of GI issues in autistic kids (17%), although they didn’t compare them with NTs. They also suggest that there may be a link between regression and GI issues, and confirm yet again that the MMR vaccine has nothing to do with autism. The most common GI issue they found was constipation, followed by diarrhea and food allergies.

This study compared GI issues between autistic kids and NT siblings. They found that 83% of the autistic sample and 28% of their siblings had at least one possibly-GI-related symptom. They also give data on specific GI symptoms, such as gaseousness (54% of autistics and 19% of siblings), abdominal discomfort (44% of autistics and 9% of siblings), and so forth. They found 20% of autistics and 2% of siblings had three or more poops per day, 32% of autistics and 2% of siblings had consistently watery poops, and 23% of autistics and none of their siblings had large changes in consistency. Also, apparently parents felt that 49% of the autistics and none of the siblings had particularly foul-smelling poops. And another for the sleep question - this study found 51% of autistics and 7% of siblings had sleep problems, with sleep problems being more common in autistic kids with GI issues.

Stimming and Sensory-Seeking - I couldn’t find much. This study I found is interesting, but it’s about more OCD-like compulsions, not actually stimming.

Oh, here’s something. A big detailed review of neurophysiological findings of sensory processing in autism.

LGBT - I’ve written up stuff about this elsewhere, but in short, autistic people, especially AFAB autistics, are definitely more likely to be asexual, bisexual, kinky and trans. Some relevant studies here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and there’s plenty more to be found.

Autistic Strengths - Well, Laurent Mottron and his team, including autistic rights advocate Michelle Dawson, have done a lot of research on what they term ‘enhanced perceptual functioning’, which they theorize explains the Block Design peak sometimes seen in autistic people. (Block Design is one of the subtests of the Weschler’s IQ test, and autistic people often show a relative strength on this test relative to other subtests on this test.) In general, I highly recommend looking at their research. It really shows what can happen when an autistic person gets involved in autism research.

This study by a different research team finds that children gifted in realistic still-life drawing have higher rates of repetitive behavior typical of autism (though none of their sample were actually autistic), and show similar visuospatial profiles to autistic kids.

This study finds that perfect pitch is associated with autistic traits. On the AQ, musicians with perfect pitch scored higher on the imagination and attention-switching subscales than musicians without perfect pitch and non-musicians. This study found a subset of autistic kids have extremely good pitch perception, with no relationship to musical training.

People in STEM fields are more likely to be autistic or have autistic relatives, especially mathematicians. (Which probably comes as no surprise to anyone who’s spent time in the math department of any university.) This study also finds that autistic kids tend to be better at math.

Sleep - as a couple studies above mentioned, sleep issues in autism could be related to melatonin metabolism or GI issues. This study found that 53% of autistic kids, 46% of kids with intellectual disabilities and 32% of NT kids have sleep problems. Autistic kids are both slower to fall asleep and more likely to wake up early than NT kids.

This study found a correlation between autistic traits and sleep problems in autistic kids. Repetitive behavior is related with being slower to get to sleep and not getting as many hours of sleep per night; communication problems are related to being slower to get to sleep, not getting as much sleep, and parasomnias (night terrors, restless leg syndrome, etc); and social differences are related to being slower to get to sleep, not getting as much sleep, waking up at night, parasomnias and breathing problems while sleeping.

This study found a strong correlation between sleep problems and sensory hypersensitivity among autistic kids. And this study found that autistic and/or intellectually disabled kids showed strong correlations between poor sleep, anxiety and behavior problems.

Andthis study found that 67.9% of autistic kids have sleep problems, and parents of kids with sleep problems were under more stress. Boys and younger children had more sleep problems.

Joint problems-This study found that people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that causes joint hypermobility, were more likely to be autistic. (And also to have mood disorders and attempt suicide.)

This study suggests that people with joint hypermobility have larger amygdala and various other brain structural differences, which was correlated with anxiety and higher sensitivity to internal body sensations. And this study found that 31.5% of people with ADHD and 13.9% of NTs have benign joint hypermobility syndrome.

Faceblindness-This study confirms that prosopagnosia (faceblindness) is more common among autistic people, with 67% having some degree of facial recognition difficulties.

This study reviews three theories about why autistic people have prosopagnosia, and concludes that the most likely of the three theories is the idea that avoiding eye contact impairs face recognition.

This study found that autistic people are slower to notice faces in scenes, and pay less attention to faces.

The last two questions I’m not really sure where to start.

if i heard that a woman aborted a fetus because prenatal screening had revealed a disability that i shared, i would simply not shame her

RIP to people who think bodily autonomy is conditional but im different

i’ve been getting a lot of comments/questions about this post. some is good, some is bad. i’ve decided not to respond individually and instead say:

  • i said what i said. i wasn’t confused about saying it.
  • if i found out a woman had aborted a fetus because she found out that fetus had a disability that i have—disabilities that i have firsthand knowledge of being painful, difficult to live with, and often resource-intensive—i would not be angry with her. i would not feel like she doesn’t think people like me should not be alive (unless she actually said so).
  • fetuses are not little potential “you”s. projecting your own anxieties onto a woman’s abortion (”i wouldn’t have wanted to be aborted” is common reasoning in plenty of pro-life circles; it’s not better here) is invasive and nonsensical.
  • bodily autonomy isn’t conditional. you don’t know a woman’s exact reason for abortion and you don’t need to. women’s rights to abortion need to be protected, even if you feel icky about some potential reasoning behind an abortion, which you aren’t even fully privy to in the first place.
  • disabled people should always be in the care of people who have the resources and desire to take care of them. insisting that disabled children be born simply to ease your own moral qualms with abortion is frankly unethical in my opinion, resources are often very slim for disabled people. not to mention our quality of life is often just lower in general. you can argue all you want in the notes about “mild” disabilities but you aren’t the arbiter of what constitutes a mild enough disability to make an abortion terrible and immoral and shame-worthy.
  • women aren’t vessels. regardless of how morally pure you feel your crusade is, they simply aren’t.
  • speaking as a disabled person, energy is literally always better spent on changing society—by increasing resources for caretakers and disabled people alike, speaking frankly about quality of life, correcting notions about what disabled people’s lives are like, punishing mistreatment of actual disabled people [not potential ones], and putting research into easing the pain/suffering of people as much as possible—than it is on getting mad about women getting abortions. and it isn’t just better spent that way, it’s just immoral to do the latter.
  • in conclusion: RIP to people who think bodily autonomy is conditional but im different.

Go OFF

People with uteruses aren’t vessels regardless of their gender presentation. People with disabilities can understand what a pain in the ass their disability is, and can also recognize that people with uteruses are not monolithic in their decision-making.

Live and let live sometimes means a few new cells get jettisoned along the way because a fully grown person made a decision about their own body, whether that was jerking off – for those for whom that jettisons cells – or getting an abortion.

So many of my family members are dealing with this. And they’ve found that the company has made opting out of auto pay damn near impossible. The place where it used to be on the site has changed, calling results in getting disconnected, when they finally found it on the site, it “times out” when they try to cancel….its just a fucking mess.

We got lucky. I’m like 80% sure we have a rate cap because I haven’t seen it spike and I’ve been watching it fairly closely. But I’ve got aunts, geandparents, friends who have had their entire paycheck taken for electric bills when they barely had power for 3 hours over the course of 5 days. Money they needed to replace food gone bad, to fix water damage, to make car repairs, all gone to a bill that shouldn’t even exist because they didn’t even have power for 3 days.

Friendly tip from a long-time bank employee…  If your money is on autopay directly from your account# or card, you can put a STOP PAYMENT on that shit!  But do it at least 3 days before it is due to be pulled from your account.  There may be a $20-30 fee for it, but that is much better than a power company trying to pull hundreds from your account and overdrafting you.

Also, if they already pulled a ridiculous amount of money from you… if you believe that the charges are for power that you did not use you likely can file a dispute with your bank.  If you lost power tell them about that and say that services were not received, or if there are sudden new previously not disclosed fees you can state that the price is different than disclosed. Those sorts of reasons should keep banking systems from messing with the account itself, as it would do for a fraud claim.  Filing a dispute against your power company might not get you your money back, but it MAY.  It may also allow the bank to waive a stop payment fee if you fear a second round of hiked rates.  Just ask the banker about that before filing the stop paymen as some systems will ONLY waive the fee if it’s done DURING the dispute process….

But!  You have to remember that the stop payment is there until YOU remove it.  While some banks may remove them after 6 months, or 1-5 years…. it will be your responsibility to remember to reestablish your payment relationship with the power company, and you’ll also then need to let your bank about it when you want to start allowing payments to process again so they can remove the block.

And for those worried that it might somehow look shady: No, the banker will NOT think you’re trying to pull a fast one.  The banker is 10000% likely to be on your side when you explain the situation and ask them questions.

If this information helps even one person then I’ll consider it a wonderful use of my time to type it out and post it.
Y’all stay STRONG!!!

n-o–v-a:

One of the reasons I’m so like. Idk, intense I guess? About talking about how perisexist language affects intersex people is like.

I have the language to talk about my intersex experiences in a way to get people to understand me. I have had to walk a careful tightrope of not upsetting perisex people by using language that doesn’t belong to me, because language simply does not EXIST for the intersex community.

We have such little language to describe our experiences and so when people use transphobic language behind their threats of violence towards us, transphobic slurs against us, and we don’t know how to describe that, and and we’re like “i think i’m experiencing transphobia somehow? Even tho i’m not trans?” We’re not attempting to appropriate trans language or speak over trans experiences, we’re trying to figure out what the fuck intersexism actually is and find a way to talk about it to people who are also experiencing the same abuse. I never even heard the word “intersexism” until 2019.

I also didn’t start even THINKING about calling myself intersex until 2019. Before then, I was just a cis woman. With a beard. And a “masculine” build and frame that started developing that way when I was eleven that I was then put on hormones to “correct” (it didn’t). And a voice that sounds like the twink from Glee, not like a Real Woman’s Voice. And before the beard, I spent a decade and a half obsessing over making my body “pass” as “female”. And I experienced dysphoria and deep self hate, I was still misgendered regularly without the beard and with full makeup, I still experienced medical abuse for the majority of my life on the basis of having an intersex condition that I didn’t know WAS considered intersex by the community.

I didn’t know I was intersex until 2019. I’ll be 30 in July 2021. I’m JUST finding my voice as an intersex person, in a way people are hearing me and listening and understanding me. But before I identified as intersex, I was just. A cis woman. Who didn’t know there was language for all this abuse and pain and trauma, who didn’t know there was the potential for having a community of people who understand my struggles and whose struggles I can understand.

And when you’re Just a Cis Woman with PCOS, what are your options for community? There’s groups for women with PCOS, sure. They’re all hyperfocused on the best ways to lose weight, the best ways to become fertile, the best ways to be more Female. To remove body hair, quick outpatient cosmetic surgeries that can help feminize you, to reduce your body to a fragment of itself just so they can pass as female in cis perisex society. This is not only internalized misogyny, but internalized intersexism to not even realize everything you’ve been conditioned to believe about your body being inherently disgusting and wrong and not “female”. These are people living with deep self hate every day, working hard to “pass” so that they don’t have to face the reality of how people treat you if you don’t.

And I know another woman, with PCOS, who grew out a full beard for years. She’s cis, bi, and was a sideshow performer. She never had the language I have now, nor the specific community of friends and peers I have to learn the things I have. She was abused badly regularly and always reacted loudly and angrily, which is her right. Part of that abuse was people in the trans community accusing her of appropriating their struggle, because she’s just a cis woman who can grow a beard, if the abuse and violence she’s experiencing is THAT bad, she should just shave and get her cis privilege back, right?

But telling an INTERSEX PERSON who doesn’t have the language to describe their experiences to alter their bodies in order to deserve respect is so fucking intersexist and gross. But she did shave, she left sideshow, she moved across the country even to get away from it all. And as far as I’m aware, she still likely doesn’t know her experience is an intersex one. None of that is privilege. Hiding her intersex traits to stop receiving death threats and having men actually try to attack her on public transit isn’t a privilege. Intersex people trying to seek validity and community being told by trans people that our pain doesn’t matter if we aren’t also trans are not privileged.

I’ve legitimately had at least three women now, in their 50s and 60s, in grocery stores (before covid) approach me, ask me if I’m a woman who grows a beard, and then break down crying TO ME A COMPLETE FUCKING STRANGER IN KROGER OR SAMS CLUB about how they’ve fought hard every day of their life to hide their fucking beard, how their HUSBAND OF DECADES isn’t allowed to touch her face, and it haunts me. These are not fucking privileged cis people who happen to grow a beard they can hide, these are intersex people who don’t have and never will have the language to describe their fucking struggles.

And if you think this is me trying to center cis problems or something and not me pointing out that the erasure of intersex people and our struggles is so fucking REAL that most of us have NO IDEA we are intersex or that we’re experiencing intersexism that doesn’t align with the standard perisex cis experience, that’s fucking on you, buddy.

And again, I’m trying to build solidarity and understanding between the intersex and trans community by educating on intersex experiences. If reading this makes you want to be angry at trans people, fucking stop, because it’s not the fault of trans people that cis perisex people have so thoroughly erased us and that’s why I’m educating. If you wanna be angry at me for any of this, you’re literally just dealing with your own intersexism and need to sort that shit out. “Cis” was never a word that considered or included intersex people and our experiences.
