[[  Final Deep Nostalgia post for now. The app had a lot of trouble with Jarlaxle, specifically with not being able to identify a face in the various artworks featuring him. I would guess that primarily his hat and secondarily his eyepatch confuses the software, and the pointy ears probably do not help either. Even the “successful” animation above shows a lot of issues (source: Waterdeep: Dragon Heist interior art).

These are the artworks that I’ve tried with Deep Nostalgia that the app couldn’t find a face in:

The last one is especially disappointing as he doesn’t have a hat on his head getting in the way for the app, but I guess the eyepatch throws off the app too much. The dramatic lighting and lack of hue diversity shouldn’t hinder the app, as with the former I was able to successfully animate a fanart of Artemis and if the latter was an issue, the app shouldn’t be able to handle black and white photos, which it does.

I didn’t try the Jarlaxle from the cover of Servant of the Shard due to it being a total profile shot. I also didn’t try the Jarlaxle from the art for cover of The Legacy, as this was the largest image that I could find of it:

The size and resolution (or rather, lack thereof) falls beneath Deep Nostalgia’s minimum threshold. ]]

[[ Another animated portrait of Artemis, this time with Todd Lockwood’s painting for the cover of Servant of the Shard brought to life by Deep Nostalgia.

Some images will yield better results than others, and some images do not work at all. From my limited experimentation, even if the app detects a face in the image, the face cannot be a total profile shot to work. Such is the reason why Artemis from the cover of Promise of the Witch King does not work, it only yields an animated image in which his face is distorted strangely in various directions. Which, I suppose is a simplified way of describing what’s going on with this app, but it is more complex than that as it employs a library of stock images to help calculate the animated result.

I really like this one because it captures his character so well. Of course, much of that is thanks to Lockwood’s depiction, but I love how in the animated version, he starts off disgusted but takes a moment to consider his surroundings, finally deciding that his original assessment was correct. XD ]]

[[ The latest craze seems to be this app made by MyHeritagecalledDeep Nostalgia, which lets you animate photographs of people. It also works on artwork.

So of course, the first thing I did was to plug in Todd Lockwood’s paintings of Artemis for the Sellswords books. This one is from the cover for Road of the Patriarch.

In any case, a neat thing to play with. ]]
