My father and I - more like my father, his bike and mine.
We went on a bike tour last weekend. 170 km and 1500 meters of altitude. Untrained already a challenge. He’s over 70 and was faster than me. Ok, he drives E - I don’t. We call non electric “bio bikers”. Well, uphill he was faster and downhill I was - that’s how it balances out. On the way we met his brother who accompanied us for a while. My father and I have had almost no contact for the past few decades. Camping, canoeing and cycling are the things that bring us together again and again. Well, rare quality time …

Trust me, it’s paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed. For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven’t tried before. So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It’s probably worth it. - Richard, ‘The Beach’ (Alex Garland)

I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.
