#tumblr features

LIVE

Okay one of the downsides of having 1.5 jobs and a child and being generally overloaded is that I basically never use my tumblr dash anymore, and I basically visit individual tumblrs on the browser like it’s blogspot circa 1999.   BUT apparently tumblr finally rolled out a way for me to pay them for their service?  YES PLEASE.   Thank you @staff .  I don’t even care what it’s ostensibly for, because FINALLY this means that I’m the customer and not the data that they’re selling.  And $40/year makes sense given how much image and video they’re hosting and the continued development of features.   (Like, I don’t visit my dash for a year and now suddenly there’s like, built-in comment and tag viewing?)

Please take my money and develop more features for the users of the site, yes good.

Here’s a list of features I’d want, btw:

- privatized blogs should still be allowed to have tag-based browsing (right now, blogs that can only be viewed by logged-in users on the dash only loads in the sidebar, which means that you can’t go to /tagged/tagname, or /search/searchterm).  (maybe the new blog view that they’re rolling out will solve this, in which case, thanks, Tumblr, for already putting in the work hours for that)

- ability to reply to comments in a post with a sideblog name and not the main

- dash filtering and curation by *me* and not an algorithm (for example, if I can group the people I follow by fandom or by general post vibe (artblog, etc) via a blog-tagging system, and then click to quickly show just, say the people posting about Ukraine

- ability to gift paid accounts to other people

- ability to sort and tag my “likes”

- ability to “mute” certain posts on the activity feed

Note: I don’t think any of these features should be locked behind a paywall (or, at most, the ones that are minor conveniences, the way Discord Nitro works).  I just want to be a paying customer for a service again.

@staff - can I buy an add-on feature that lets me add my own private notes to someone’s account, like on LJ way back when?

I really need “You met this person as Blorbostan420 in X fandom” as reference when they change their icon and user name for the EIGHTY SECOND TIME

Introducing: Reblog Controls

This is not a drill, repeat, this is not a drill—we are rolling out reblog controls across web and iOS, starting today.

How does it work?

When drafting a post, select the settings cog in the top right corner of your post editor. From here, you can choose one of two options.

  • “Anyone (on Tumblr)” means just that.
  • “No one” means that your post cannot be reblogged by anyone, ever.

Why?

Your wish is our command. Many of you have told us this feature would give you a welcome sense of safety. If you block someone after the post was made, don’t worry—they still can’t reblog it. This change gives you control over your own posts, and so will improve your posting experience. Ultimately, better posting means a better Tumblr. And finally, don’t worry, Android users. The feature will follow on your platform soon.

That’s all, folks. Happy reblogging!

Any questions? Drop us a line on @wiporSupport, and keep an eye out for the mobile rollout on@changes.

I would add the option “only followers” can reblog. But still, this is a cool feature specially for personal or rant posts. Nice

Sharing is gifting Ad-Free Browsing.

Yup, you heard correctly. From today, you can gift Ad-Free Browsing to other users when you check out on web. So, if you love giving presents and know someone who doesn’t love ads on Tumblr, this will be great news for you. You can gift an ad-free month to a special someone at $4.99 or a whole ad-free year at $39.99—that’s 4 months for $0. You can include a little note with your present, or even send it anonymously. You have asked if gifting would become a reality—so welcome to the future. It’s good to see you.

How?

  1. Select “Gift” on the recipient’s blog header.
  2. Choose a subscription for one month or one year.
  3. Enter your card details and hit “Pay now.”
  4. The lucky user receives their gift. Success!
  5. Ad-free preferences can be adjusted in settings or after receiving a gift.

Who’s eligible to receive Ad-Free?

Gifting is only available to users who do not already have Ad-Free,andusers who already have an existing web-based subscription. Users with an existing subscription through Apple or Google in-app purchases cannot receive Ad-Free Browsing as a gift due to technical limitations on those platforms.

Please also note that while the recipient’s dash will be ad-free across all platforms once it is received, purchasing and viewing your gifts is only available on web. Gifting web-based Ad-Free Browsing will become possible on Android and iOS soon. You can find out more about Ad-Free in this Help Centerarticle.

Any questions? Then please drop us a line on @wiporSupport, and keep an eye out for more updates on@changes.
