A city with Etruscan origins locted in historical region - Tuscia - where were many Etruscan cities, conquered by Romans in IV-th century B.C.
The historic, medieval center of Viterbo is still surrounded by walls built in XI-th and XII-th centuries with many ancient gates.
Viterbo is known as a City of Popes. In fact in XIII-th century it was a place of a papacy for about 24 years and here was a place from where Popes ruled country and were elected. In this period Viterbo had more inhabitants than Rome.
Area around Viterbo is famous for therms, some of them are in use since Etruscan or Romans days.
For the city very characteristic are towers and fountains. “Must see” is a good preserved, medieval district of San Pellegrino.

IL PALAZZO DELLA DOLCE VITA DI FELLINI
⛲️ Tutti conoscono la scena iconica di Anita Ekberg che si tuffa nella Fontana di Trevi, ma sapete che una scena molto lunga de La Dolce Vita è stata girata nel Palazzo Giustiniani-Odescalchi a Bassano Romano?
Questa villa fu comprata dalla famiglia Giustiniani, nel 1595. Fu Vincenzo ad avviare lavori di ampliamento, aggiungendo il piano principale e soprattutto il giardino. Amante delle arti, la collezione di Vincenzo contava circa 3000 statue antiche e 300 dipinti, tra cui una dozzina di Caravaggio.
Nei secoli successivi la dimora passò agli Odescalchi ma poi fu abbandonata (lo stato la acquistò solo nel 2003!) e tutti gli arredi sono andati dispersi o rubati. Oggi rimangono solo gli affreschi, ad opera di importanti pittori quali Tempesta, Domenichino e Albani.
Questa sensazione di decadenza è resa bene ne La Dolce Vita quando gli attori, con candelabri in mano, vagano per il giardino ed entrano in un palazzo diroccato nella scena notturna che termina con una seduta spiritica.

FELLINI’S DOLCE VITA CASTLE
⛲️ Everybody knows the iconic scene of Anita Ekberg cooling off in the Fountain of Trevi, but how many know that some scenes of the film were shot in the Giustiniani-Odescalchi castle of Bassano Romano?
This castle is the original residence of Vincenzo Giustiniani, who purchased it in 1595. He launches the renovation and transformation, adding the main floor and financing an expansion of the garden. His art collection included more than 3000 statues and 300 paitings, with a dozen of Caravaggio.
During the centuries the property has been abbandonated and anything of value was carried off and sold. Only the frescoes remain.
This decadence is replicated in La Dolce Vita as the actors carry a candelabra through the courtyard and along the luxurious garden paths, emulating the lavishness of Roman nobility.
