i know the general done thing in fics is to have jgy be very cynical about his dad from day 1 but like. i don’t think that is my read actually. i think he really loved his dad. the “i will do anything for you” behavior wasn’t just so he could stay on his good side or gain influence, it was because he wanted any scrap of affection or affirmation from his dad that badly. idk. i am thinking about this in connection with nmj. it hurts worse if he maintains a slightly unhinged devotion to them up until nmj kicks him down the stairs and his dad says “hahaha. forget about it.” and he wouldn’t have gone as far outside of the realm of reasonability when killing them if he wasn’t so insanely hurt because. he loved them. he did ridiculous, insane things to show them that. and none of it mattered because in the end hedidn’t matter and no action on his part could change that. but they were just going to let him keep busting his ass to earn something they had no intention of ever giving him.

cql is flawed in various ways but one thing I absolutely love and think was well crafted is the portrayal of jiang cheng. because jiang cheng has all the set-up of an antagonist and potential villain: he has low self-esteem and is less skilled than his (clan) brother. he’s constantly reminded of his insecurities by his mother and by lack of closeness with his father. he’s short-temper. he thinks about his own clan first. even his looks (portrayed by the wonderful wang zhuocheng) and expressions have him grimacing or frowning or scowling–qualities attributed to villain types.

jiang cheng in cql was set up to be seen as a villain right from the beginning–known as the one who will kill his brother–and so we keep thinking that jiang cheng is going to have that One Moment where he’s fed up and finally turns against wei wuxian. we think it’s the scene in the forest after jiang yanli stands up for wei wuxian and jiang cheng comes in late, and then overhears other clans talking shit about jiang clan. we think it’s the moment jiang cheng and wei wuxian fight and cut off ties. we think it’s the death of jiang yanli that finally turns jiang cheng to kill his brother.

and here’s is where i think cql did fantastic: that critical turning point, that cliff scene, is everything. the focus isn’t only about lan wangji holding on tightly to wei wuxian. we were already shown that in the beginning of the drama and so that itself isn’t the surprise. (for lan wangji and wei wuxian, it’s about the depth of wangji’s despair and regrets for “failing” wei wuxian.)

the surprise that no one expected is jiang cheng’s hesitance–his tears!–and then him not following through for what he’s famous for: killing wei wuxian. he stabs a rock. he exchanges a hard but complicated stare with wei wuxian, who is the one who chooses to let go.

this layer of complexity, this lie that the cultivation world believes but only the three of them knows the truth, makes jiang cheng such an incredibly great character for he is not a complete villain but also not a likeable traditional hero, he is a flawed complex character.

now, i think cql was flawed in not showing more jiang cheng scenes after the return to the present, especially after wen ning tells the truth about his core. i wished we could’ve seen a scene of jiang cheng desperately trying to get someone to pull it out and his depth of despair as he comes to the truth–and we see hints of his grief not only about misunderstanding wei wuxian and being upset at wei wuxian for all these secrets, but also about his own secret…

i think that would’ve made for a smoother transition to the ultimate reveal that jiang cheng was the one who saved wei wuxian first.

a little comic about hands, love, and owning a body that was not your own

the untamed(but not really since you know no body switch which I’m forever sad about)I know wwx shouldn’t have the wrist scars post canon but I needed them for thematic resonance okayI’m the artist I do what I wantplease talk to me about body ownership and self violence and self sacrifice in this storyanytime truly I looked at my hands so much for this I can’t stand the sight of them now (via@still-snowing)

hmm I had to read this like three times and then go read ops tagsbut now it’s hitting me and it’s hitting me hardI always loved the body switch aspect—but not bc I genuinely like itit’s so angsty and uncomfortable and honestly traumatic. wwx was given life again to complete somethingand then he goes and continues to live a life ‘his’ body was never going to experienceand this art is so spot on and yes yes yes incredible. Bc does wwx ever have mornings where he forgets who he is. Bc he knows his mindbut that’s all he has now. the same way mxy’s body was never meant to have this life w lwjwwx’s body will never experience life w lwj.anywho that was my rant. op I share your feelings about this and I’m also in love with this art tysm (via @sm-pclnr)

I think about this a lot how uncomfortable it would be to not have your own body how wrong it would feel and to miss your old one class and all I also wonder how lwj feels who is obviously just happy to have wwx back the man you fell in love with just has a new body… like that would be… weird (via@ashayxm)

mo xuanyu(in body if not in spirit!)one of the major things i dislike abt cql is a complete disregard of wwx being in a different bodylike… coming to terms w/ yourself after you’ve been dead for ~13 yearsplus you’re in a different body??anyway op this is beautiful i haven’t stopped thinking about it for like 4 days nwo(via@godkilling)

OH WOW OH WOW I AGREE W/ GODKILLING’S TAGS THAT IT’S SUCH A SHAME THAT CQL DOESN’T MENTION WWX HAVING A NEW BODY LIKE. THEY COULD HAVE LOOKED STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. THAT’S FINE. BUT MAYBE THEY COULD’VE HAD DIFFERENT WIGS. CONTACTS. A FEW PASSING COMMENTS ABOUT SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES. IT’D HAVE BEEN SATISFYING EVEN WITH XIAO ZHAN PLAYING THE ROLE THROUGHOUT ANYWAY… THIS… UGH OP YOU’RE KILLING ME THANK YOU (via@qinghe-s)

oh wowthis makes me so sad but hdbdhd so true actuallyI think mxy would be happy for him either waywwx completed his revengeand then lived the life mo xuanyu would have wanted but never would have (via@anxious-witch)

he’s never going to question it / but i doif i stay still if i don’t speakbut then i speak and i move and he smilesoh the pain and poetrythis is such a beautiful comic and the lyrical way the text is writtenabsolutely amazingthis is also just such an important topici love the way wwx acknowledges a difference between how he and lwj perceive his/mxy’s bodyalso the underlying current of guilt about being broight back for a reason and now using this chance to be happyand to literally use the body to be with lwjmost chilling favourite also has to bei’m still youit’s both beautiful for how lwj recognises wwx in the things that are almost unperceivably yet distinctly histhe actions he actively doesbut the horror behind the fact that when he wakes up and doesn’t move yetthere is each morning the off-chance that this is mxy againjust… i love thisand the hands obviously are beautiful and a great symbolic focus for this theme (via@moniazalea)

this iswowthe dissonance of not knowing who you arein a stranger’s bodyuntil ur reminded by the one who knows youlikeyeah lwj would know himeven in a different body he knew himok time to lay down (via@vilinglaozu)

STOP STOP IM GONNA START CRYING…..there’s something inherently queer about it all isn’t therelike not to Get Into It or anything but finding yourself for who you are only in the care of your loverbeing in a body that is and isn’t yourslosing and yet finding yourself physicallyit’s just…..there’s something inherently queer about it all isn’t there. (via@thecommunityoftrustworthysinks)
