“An ivory vessel of feathers and scales drifting across the sea, the Alarchs were once beasts of beauty on par with the angels themselves. Fairies rode upon their backs, steadily sailing the world back when time felt infinite. As their masters fled into the unknown, the Alarchs let sorrow guide them, and they too disappeared, rolling waves cradling them into unseen oceans.
Written off as a fairytale, seaside folk were shocked to see the mighty waxen serpents find harbour on our shores. Spring steers these Fairy ships now, crashing them upon the mainland in a flurry of entangled heads and a crushing, horned beak—a mockery of what they used to be. They are no longer accompanied by gentle song, but by endless, wretched shrieking.”
Written from the point of view of a travelling archivist, Omens of Spring is a fully illustrated dossier featuring 35 unique and storied entities who have emerged during a perpetual Spring, signalling the end times.
The journey is a macabre one, but also surreal and whimsical in its own strange way.
If you enjoy my creative writing work, my creature designs or my world building, Omens of Spring features all three. It is very much a passion project like Hiraeth and one that is very personal for me.
“While the minds of mortal schemers can be dissected and postulated upon, the Emissaries are akin to a force of nature. Any sudden interest in us unnerves me to my core.”
