The ceiling is timber, with exposed beams. The walls are a rough beige plaster. Large squares of stone tiles line the floor. The left wall is unseen beyond the edge of the painting. Along the back wall, there is a large cooking fireplace with various tools, pans and dried plants hanging from the mantel. A fireplace crane holds a kettle on a hanger, with a stack of pots and plans sitting below. In front of the fireplace on the ground is a jar and wooden pail. To the right is an open display cabinet with various ceramic vessels, jars and containers. On the right wall are two shelves displaying porcelain plates and cups, and a table below the window with jugs, bottles and plates of fruit and bread. To the left and behind Miranda are two small tables, the taller is covered by a table cloth with a teapot and tea cup on a tray, a pewter jug and mug. The lower and smaller bench has a container of harvested greens and a wooden bucket of carrots. There is an overall feeling of stillness and loneliness.
