Ahhh I’ve been so inactive in this realm because of deadlines on other stuff, but it’s the new year!
I imagine the first few years Shangqi was out on his own, this time of the year would have been incredibly bittersweet. It’s THE holiday to be with your loved ones, and amongst Chinese communities, you feel the ‘holiday spirit.’ Being surrounded by something so familiar yet without the root–family; being alone when everyone around you has a place to go and people to be with. Maybe he falls in with Katy and her family quickly, before he has to figure out his first new year totally alone, but it’ll take a few years before their traditions feel like home.
