One of the really interesting things going on with Yellowjackets structurally, that for me at least is only really more apparent looking back on the full season, is how different the past and present feels in terms of the tension and paranoia. Even though we ultimately know the danger they are in as their teenage selves and where things are headed, the narrative there often feels straight forward in many ways. Sometimes the events are horrific or hard to explain, but we feel grounded in the sense of place. 

Watching their adult selves, everything feels a lot fuzzier. I’m not sure who is lying when, I’m not sure if what they’re seeing is real, I’m not sure if they’re deceiving only others or also themselves. There’s this real sense of being always just off center, always slightly out of place and uncomfortable, even more discomfort than when they were in the middle of the woods (and we know they’re probably going to start eating each other), and that’s so brilliantly executed. It’s that sense of unease, constant displacement, that feels like it’s a symptom of ongoing unresolved trauma and it’s so effectively communicated to the viewer that it makes the present day stuff (especially at first) so disorienting and unnerving just to watch.

The stark difference between the two really helps to underline how damaging their time in the woods was emotionally, and how truly upsetting it would be to live in this unresolved state of ongoing trauma and pain.

Oh my god, all of this, like—early in the series I had some trouble kind of drawing a line between the girls and their adult selves until I realized how deliberate that was. Like the girls seem so vivid and alive and by comparison the adults are sort of muted and artificial especially at first, and this is 100 percent a feature and not a bug. Like anything that was not cut away by their experience they were determined to smother or bury or box up until they were each these extremely narrow versions of themselves that they felt they could stand to be, the only parts they felt they could live in and show to others. Nat is the closest but even then it’s like fucking looking at her from underwater. As we start heading into the end of the season tho these versions start to unravel and it’s fascinating to see like…further trauma is forcing open these narrow selves but of course cannot restore them to any wholeness. Very interested to see where we end up.

Poor Laura Lee. Brb photoshopping a “Jesus is My Co-Pilot” t-shirt onto her. But for real—a slow-burning incendiary in the bear? Maybe? I mean it would not be hard. Did someone hand it to her before takeoff? Or I guess maybe I should accept the inevitable: that they really are going supernatural. It’s funny, usually I would be so stoked but I have mixed feelings about that.

I am. Very Worried about Lottie. Or rather I suppose there’s nothing to worry about because I know what’s going to happen to her, but fuck dude. Is she really supposed to be psychic?

Side note I fucking love Callie to death. Can’t relate to Shauna on that account. How did that little blackmail attempt not make you like your daughter more???

Also I would do anything to know Taissa and Simone’s romance. Did they meet in college? I’m dying to know what Simone knows about the woods OH SHIT AS IM WRITING THIS VAN AND TAI ARE KISSING I didn’t know they were together I thought tai just loved her FUCK this is gonna be so sad

the fact that most of you guys don’t even know about misty quigley makes me want to fall to floor she’s literally every tumblr girl who says she wants to study boys like a bug and put them in a pringles can and shake it she thinks she’s in pretty little liars having a sexy student/teacher forbidden romance except he’s gay and just straight up does not like her. she’s the reason everyone in the group got high and tried to do human sacrifices and cannibalism and then when everyone got pissed at her for it she got everyone mad at jackie directly leading to her brutal death. she does not seem to feel even a little bit bad about any of those things except for when it affects her social standing. she’s a killer and a girlboss but far more than either of those things she is well and truly a pathetic loser with a pet bird and no friends. she snorted coke so natalie couldn’t relapse which she only knew was gonna happen because she installed hidden cameras in natalie’s house. she now thinks she’s in a f/f buddy cop comedy when she’s literally in a horror-mystery-thriller. she destroyed the group’s one chance at getting rescued just because she was useful at helping severe injuries and survival strategies and therefore became well-liked. she seems really really chill about the whole cannibalism thing but WILL judge you for smoking cigarettes. and she wears crocs. she is one of the greatest characters of all time
