On This Day in History June 3, 2006: Based on the results of an Independence Referendum dated May 21, 2006, the state of Montenegro declared its independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegro was part of that union since 2003. Prior to that, Montenegro was part of the state of Yugoslavia.
