Changes: |Part 1| |Part 2|
Since the day when Jacob Black told you he imprinted on Bella Swan, relationships left a bad taste in your mouth. Jacob was your childhood sweetheart and even though you knew all the legends and the consequences their imprinting brings, he was still your first love. The happy memories you share will never be forgotten, but you had to move on. Your heart deserved better than the pain of your break-up was causing it. Distancing yourself from La Push in general, you only stayed in contact with your closer friends there. Jared told you how confused and sad Jacob was, asking you to give him another chance.
Seasons passed and feelings changed, you grew up and matured. Jacob would always be your first love, but he wasn’t your last. While waiting for your significant other to finish with work, you fill the time with some window shopping. During which a familiar voice calls your name. Turning your body to the voice, you see Jacob hurrying over. He smiles a wide smile, hugging you softly. You pat his back awkwardly, the shapeshifter noticing something isn’t quite what it used to be.
“So,” he starts once he takes a step back, “how’ve you been? It’s been… It’s been a while.”
“I’ve been okay. And yeah, almost four years now, how time flies, huh?”
“Yeah…”
You glance at the clothing through the window by which you’re standing at. Jacob clears his throat, feeling a frog in his throat like he hasn’t in a long time.
“How are you and Bella?“
The question shocks him into a stupor, so you glance at him when you receive no answer. Your gaze on him snaps him back into reality.
“Oh, we-we’re okay. I mean, we’re good friends and all.”
“I thought you imprinted on her?”
Jacob’s silence explains everything you didn’t need to know about his life. At that moment, you realised that he never imprinted on Bella. And when he himself realised that, he never sought you out. Too ashamed after how he treated you.
“I'm… I’m sorry.”
“I always knew you would find someone… A soulmate. And I was always prepared. Every day we went to sleep was just another day of blissful ignorance for me. But then you told me you thought you imprinted on Bella. And that wasn’t good enough for me.”
“(Y/n), I never wanted it to end like that… I’m so sorry. You think you could ever forgive me? That we could move past that and become friends again?”
The door behind Jacob opens and the Deputy Sheriff steps out, saying goodbye to Charlie for the day. The young man spots you, wrapping his arms around you and bringing you into a kiss.
“I missed you. Both of you.”
“Oh, hush now.”
Jacob’s heart breaks a little bit, knowing he wanted to intrude on something you had created for yourself because of him. Without him. You smile at Jacob.
“Take care of yourself, okay? Your soulmate’s out there waiting for you.”
The two of you leave the shapeshifter to wither away on the pavement. His eyes lose that exciting luster they had when he saw you for the first time in years.
“Yeah… Out there…”
Author’s Note:
I left the ending a little dubious. I haven’t written anything substantial in a while and when this idea popped up, I said why not? Not everyone deserves happy endings. @spideysimpossiblegirl wanted to be tagged, so here it is! :)
