In the temple women promise to obey their husbands. They are also ordained to be queens and priestesses… To their husbands. A woman in the church is nothing without a husband. Especially a non-obedient one.

Sure, Kimball isn’t alive today and no Mormon leader (at least the ones at the top) would dare utter such harsh words in public now. But the temple wording still reflects this view, as does the proclamation to the family. From personal experience, there are plenty of men in the church that prescribe to this authoritative sexism.

Covert misogyny just means that it’s not as apparent to outsiders (and even most in the LDS church) that women in the church are being oppressed and abused.
