gregorygalloway:

Elvis Costello’s 13th studio album was released on 14 May 1991.

A self-described “angry” record, Mighty Like a Rose has also been called Costello’s “strangest” album, with a wide variety of song styles (including 2 songs co-written with Paul McCartney) and deliberately “messy” production.

Costello wanted to release the album under his given name, Declan MacManus, but the label refused.

Might Like a Rose peaked at #5 in the UK, but only reached #55 in the US.

Costello would not release another “rock” record for 3 years, working with composer Richard Harvey on the G.B.H. tv soundtrack (1991) and with the Brodsky Quartet on The Juliet Letters (1993).

gregorygalloway:

De La Soul’s 2nd studio album was released on 14 May 1991.

While many critics viewed the album as an explicit rejection of the “daisy-age” hippy culture seemingly espoused on their debut, others saw it as a continuation of the band’s experimentation. The album received mixed reviews, and did not sell nearly as well as the debut (it peaked at #26 in the US), it still sold more than 500,000 copies and has been named as “one of the best rap albums of all time” and one of the most “influential.”
