So…have you seen the latest one yet? I heard it got mixed reviews. Can’t remember the name of it though, it’s on the tip of my Bun. Er, tongue. Boobs. What?
I really loved this short Mace Windu story (from Legends’ Star Wars Tales) because I love Mace as a character who didn’t just luck into being one of the greatest Jedi ever, but who struggled to get there, who had his issues to overcome, who made mistakes along the way–
And then used the story of those mistakes to teach that to younglings.
I mean, I enjoyed the look into this version of Mace’s younger days just because I love the character, but where it really got me was that this was a story Mace was telling to the younglings! That not only is he good with kids, not only is Mace very much a teacher as the Jedi Order overall strive to be teachers, but that he’s telling them about how he himself struggled and made missteps.
The Jedi children have always known that you don’t have to be perfect, you have choices, you can ask questions about the Jedi ways or what you want out of your own path, that you can make mistakes, but as long as your heart is in the right place and you keep working on yourself, that’s what they ask.
To have the Master of the Order teaching that he himself had to pick himself back up, that you have to find the balance between self-confidence and thinking you’re the hottest shit around, that he made a mistake, but that it’s through thinking of how your actions affect others and working to help others selflessly even when you fumble, that’s how you become a Jedi Knight in spirt, that’s a lovely message.
MACE WINDU IS AMAZING WITH KIDS, AN INCREDIBLE TEACHER, AND ONE OF THE BEST JEDI WHO EVER LIVED, I’M GONNA FIGHT ANYONE WHO TRIES TO TAKE THIS HILL FROM ME.
one thing that i see that drives me insane is the idea that “the jedi needed to adapt with the times” and that they “failed to evolve” to match the changing culture of the republic and like… good? if your culture is sliding into fascist corruption and decadence, what exactly are they meant to have evolved into? like exactly what about their Code should have changed? they should have become less concerned with moderation and democracy? what the hell does that mean? more violence and less oversight? that’s licherally the Sith. they needed to allow jedi knights to form “attachments” aka possessive, corrupt bonds that are like dark side bait? WHY? how the hell would that help anything??
What’s funny about this reading is that they did adapt with the times in one crucial way: they militarised. Which, uh, visibly did not help them.

They were the last barrier between Sidious and absolute power, he couldn’t have his empire without eradicating them first, as long as they were an organisation that would attempt to fight tyranny they would be targeted no matter what else they did. They could allow marriage and stuff, they could have refused to fight with the army, they could have been more of a ‘classic’ warrior culture, they could have been Mandalorians 2.0, their dresscode could have been shades of neon, whatever. They still would have been targeted using any mechanism available.
My favorite response to that argument is to go, “okay, then what SHOULD they do?” and watch as whoever’s making the accusation confidently declares a “solution” that would have gotten the Jedi fucked over by Sidious and the government just as fast if not faster
