I often see people trip up on ‘the Jedi don’t allow attachment,’ and yeah, that’s fair, given that there’s a lot of different factors at play.

Lucas seems to consider ‘unhealthy attachment’ synonymous with ‘attachment’ which is hella confusing. Also, he did, as I understand it (correct me if I’m wrong) say that Jedi weren’t allowed to marry, but then some kid wrote him like ‘Jedi not being able to marry makes me sad :(’ and Lucas was like ‘LOL just kidding Jedi can get married’ so. There’s that. And we don’t know how much of that was Lucas legitimately changing his mind and how much of it was him just not caring anymore and how much was him being kind to a kid.

Also, given the ginormous volume of all forms of canon, some assholes just straight up hate the Jedi going in (looking at you Karen Traviss) so of course they’re going to portray the Jedi in the worst possible light.  Comics are just straight up batshit sometimes. Video games need to put in certain mechanics and make certain narrative choices to make both Light and Dark side paths palatable to most people.  Basically, from a meta standpoint, it’s a mess, and sometimes you just have to pick your canon and go on your way.

Personally, I consider the movies (all six of them, plus Rogue One) to be my primary canon. I like to pull in elements from things like TCW series, and books like the JA books, if only because those are more widely known and it’s easier to riff off them than to construct Obi and Qui’s early years from whole cloth.

The problem with that, of course, is that the movies are, relatively speaking, short. They don’t give us a lot of detail about the Jedi - I mean, we don’t actually even have the Jedi code! The whole ‘There is no emotion there is peace’ is from an 80′s RPG book! And that can be so, so frustrating, because there’s not even any meta resources - Lucas has never, to my knowledge, said ‘here is the Jedi Code’ and smacked a stack of papers down on the table for all of us to pick apart. We have bits and pieces of it (you can only have one padawan at a time), but not anything near the whole. So  yeah, I do end up using the RPG book stuff because it’s fairly widespread and there isn’t anything else.

So there is a lot, and I mean a LOT of wiggle room when it comes to determining what the Jedi do and do not allow when it comes to ‘attachment,’ and how stringent they are about it. But I don’t think that they ever mean ‘don’t feel anything for anyone, ever.’

I do think they mean, at the very least, no UNHEALTHY attachments.

What do I mean by that, you may ask? Well, here’s an example.  Say there are two parents, and they have a kid. A little baby girl. and they have all kinds of hopes and dreams for their kid - she’s going to be a ballerina! And one day she’s going to get married and wear a white dress and have kids and the parents will have wonderful grandbabies etc etc.  And the parents get really invested in that. As the kid grows up, they enroll them in ballerina class and buy them things with ballerinas on it and the mom has a few wedding magazines tucked away with dresses her little girl might like.  And then one day, the kid comes to their mom and says. Um, actually, mom, I’m a boy.

Unhealthy attachment reaction: “no you are not! You’re my baby girl! This is just a phase!”  This happens because the mom has built up a future for her kid that will make her(the mom) happy. She may also be attached(there’s that word again) to social norms like ‘kids are the gender they’re assigned as’ and others.

Healthy/compassionate love reaction: “thank you for trusting me enough to tell me that, and I want you to know that I love and support you. Is there anything you’d like to do differently, and what would you like me change?” The mom realizes that maybe, even if her child were a girl, they wouldn’t have become a professional ballerina, and that if they do want to be a ballerina, there’s nothing saying boys can’t do it too. As for marriage, maybe her kid would never have gotten married anyway, or would have gotten married five times but never have found lasting happiness.

Basically, with the compassionate reaction, the mom acknowledges that life is chaotic, and we can’t decide other people’s lives for them, but we can love and support the people close to us as they are, instead of trying to force them to be something they’re not for the enforcer/parent’s personal satisfaction.

To sum up - don’t be so attached/so in ‘love’ with the ideathat you have of someone that you end up hurting them by refusing to let go of it. Instead, accept and support them as they are, and try to help them reach theirgoals, not yours.

Now, sometimes people want self-destructive things, like killing children to save Padme Amidala, so there are factors like other people’s lives that play into this - Obi-Wan would never ‘help and support’ Anakin in killing children. But if Anakin had come to Obi-Wan and said ‘I’m married to Padme and I want to leave the Jedi Order,’ Obi-Wan would have gone ‘congratulations, I can see she makes you very happy, what can I do to help?’ even though Obi-Wan really wanted to see Anakin become a great Jedi.

The thing is, Obi-Wan wants Anakin to be happy and content more than he wants Anakin to conform to Obi-Wan’s expectations. That’s compassionate love.

Anakin was willing to do things he knewPadme would not be okay with (killing children) in order to (potentially) save her life. He was so attached to Padme, that he could not let her go, even if it meant he had to commit atrocities and cause her emotional and mental trauma to try and save her(and keep in mind, Anakin was only afraidthat she would die, but there was nothing medically wrong that he knew of. And yes I can see where he was traumatized by his mom dying and he had dreamed of her death leading up to it but. Still. Go to a DOCTOR not a SITH LORD auuugh fuck Palpatine with a rusty spork). THAT is unhealthy attachment.

Earlier today I made a reference to “Backstroke of the West”, and when I looked it up I saw that the original post was made in 2005, which means that a good chunk of people on here might be too young to remember it. So consider this post a public service.

The following was originally posted here

episode iii, the backstroke of the west

i saw revenge of the sith last weekend at a local theater with my friend joe who was in town on business. it was much better than the first two movies and a fitting end (err.. middle) to the star wars saga.

the next day i was walking past my friendly dvd salesperson and decided to check out revenge of the sith. i was assured the quality was good and for 7rmb why not give it a shot.

aside from the counters on the top of the screen and a distorted perspective it was ok- not high quality but watchable. the captions were a hilarious surprise- a direct english translation of the chinese interpretation of what the script was saying. it varied from being somewhat close to the script to being ‘far far away’….

amazingly enough, the beginning scroll is mistranslated even though the words are right there on the screen.

star war (just one)

‘the backstroke of the west’ is the english translation of the chinese title.

anakin: “this is where the fun begins”

obi wan: “let them pass between us”

anonymous doomed fighter pilot: “they’re all over me”

Very important fandom history.

I’m CRYING. I’d never seen this before. According to @persian-slipper‘s tags, this is the origin of “do not want”.
