“I suggest the two of you head straight to bed.” Snape drawled when the trio arrived back at Hogwarts. “Don’t get caught.”

“But sir-” Y/N called out in a hushed voice, but Snape had already whirled around and began to walk away.

Her mind was reeling trying to process what had just happened. She looked at Draco. “What the fuck was that?”

Draco couldn’t meet Y/N’s eyes. “I-I er…How did you lie?”

“Whatever Snape gave Voldemort, it wasn’t Veritaserum.”

This piqued Draco’s interest. “Then why would you tell him about running away?”

“He already knew, Draco! If I lied, He’d have known. That would be me dead, you dead and Snape dead. I wasn’t going to let that happen.”

Draco didn’t say anything. Y/N rubbed her stinging cheek. She was sure it would bruise tomorrow if she didn’t put some Dittany on it. And she should put some on her shoulders too.

“How did He know? About running away?” Y/N asked the question that had been eating her up since the revelation. “Did you tell someone?”

“I-I have a journal. It’s been missing for a few days now. I thought I left it in the Room of Requirement, but…”

Y/N took a deep breath to calm herself. She told herself it wasn’t Draco’s fault. “Okay, alright.”

“I’m sorry, Y/N-”

“No, it’s okay.” Y/N interrupted. “It’s done now. We made it out alive. But please, be more careful. I’ll see you tomorrow, I’m going to bed.”

“Y/N-” Draco called out.

“Midnight in the Room of Requirement. You’re telling me everything. No more secrets.” And with that, Y/N headed to bed, leaving Draco alone in the dark corridor.

-

All day, Draco had tried to get Y/N’s attention, to catch her eye. And all day, Y/N had ignored him. In class, she looked only at the professor and her notes. In the Great Hall, she practically sat at the opposite end of the table to Draco. In between classes, Draco would try to catch up with Y/N, but she was too nimble.

He knew he had to come clean tonight. About everything. His task, his parents, his feelings. He had planned to do it the night before, but everything that could possibly have gone wrong went wrong. He kicked himself for not telling her everything sooner.

If Y/N hadn’t come up with her quick lie, they’d both be dead. She had saved his life again. And not to mention there was the situation with Snape, lying to the Dark Lord and giving him a decoy Veritaserum. Whose side was Snape on?

Much like usual when you dread something, midnight came around quickly. So quickly, Draco realised he hadn’t even planned out what he was going to say. And at this rate, he wasn’t even sure if Y/N would turn up. Nevertheless, on his way to the Room, he went over in his head just how he would tell her everything.

“Over here.” Draco heard when he’d entered the Room.

Y/N was standing between a broken old desk and a pile of discarded chairs, some with legs missing, others missing their backs. She was wearing her uniform still.

“Hey,” Draco said, not sure what else to say. “I wasn’t sure if you would actually be here.”

“I’m here,” she said softly. “I need to know everything, Draco. I can’t have any more secrets between us.”

Draco nodded. “I know. I’ll tell you anything. Just ask.”

Y/N hopped up on top of the old desk. Draco stood opposite her in front of the stacked chairs. She seemed to be thinking about what to ask first, and Draco couldn’t blame her. There was a lot she didn’t know.

“What’s your task from Voldemort?” She asked after a few moments of silence.

“He wants me to…to kill someone.”

“Who, Draco? You can tell me anything, you can trust me.”

He couldn’t avoid it anymore, Y/N had to know the truth. She deserved it after all the had done for him.

“Dumbledore.”

Y/N was silent for a minute. The seconds dragged on as if for eternity. Draco could hear the sound of his heart pounding in his chest over the silence.

“So, that’s…” Y/N thought aloud. “That’s why the necklace…and the poison…”

Draco nodded, ashamed of his actions.

“Oh, Draco.” Y/N spoke in a whisper. “You really are in deep.”

“I don’t want your sympathy!” Draco burst out, temporarily losing control of his emotions.

Y/N, however, did not look fazed. “Don’t give me that, Draco, we’re past all that shit. I pulled you back from the edge of a tower and held you while you cried.”

Draco didn’t want to admit that Y/N was right, so he stayed quiet. He hadn’t meant to get angry, sometimes he just can’t control it.

“I’ve been thinking,” Y/N said. “About Snape.”

“What about him?” Draco asked.

“If you’d let me finish.” Y/N shot Draco a look. “I’m not sure what side he’s on, but if he were truly loyal to Voldemort, he wouldn’t have helped us. What if he’s a double agent?”

Draco looked confused. “Double agent for who?”

“The Order.” Y/N explained, which told Draco nothing. “Of the Phoenix. Dumbledore’s version of the Death-Eaters, except no one’s there against their will.”

“Where do I sign up?” Draco joked.

“I know you’re just joking, but I’m not. We can help Harry defeat Voldemort. They won’t send us to Azkaban because we helped them win. We’ll be free.”

Draco could hardly believe what he was hearing. “Who’s proposing crazy ideas now, huh?”

“I’ve already decided, Draco. I’m doing it. And I think you should too.”

“Why?”

Y/N scooted off the desk and stood up. “Because I care about you and want to-”

“But why?” Draco demanded, losing control again. “Why on Earth do you care about me? I’m a fucking terrible person! I’ve just told you that I’ve been ordered to assassinate the fucking headmaster and you still refuse to see how bad I am.”

“You aren’t bad!” Y/N shouted back. She hadn’t meant to raise her voice but she couldn’t help it. “You do what you have to do to survive, Draco. Just like me! If you’re bad then so am I.”

Y/N wasn’t sure why her voice had cracked, but when tears blurred her vision, she realised. Quickly, she turned away from Draco. She couldn’t let him see her cry.

“Hey,” Draco whispered. “You’re not bad, okay? Don’t ever think that. I’m sorry that I yelled at you, I shouldn’t have done that. Come here.”

He took Y/N is his arms, holding her close to his chest. He could feel her warmth and the shaking of her shoulders as she cried. He tucked her head under his chin, stroking her hair gently.

“Crucio!” Her father cried.

Y/N screamed. The pain was unbearable. She was sure she was dying, this must be what that feels like. She screamed and screamed.

At first, Y/N was stubborn. She refused to scream, refused to plead. But it had been days. She was starving, she was tired. The pain wouldn’t stop.

“Please stop!” Y/N cried. Her throat was raw from screaming. She couldn’t scream any more.

It stopped. In her place stood Draco, her father using the Cruciatus curse on him while he called out in pain.

Y/N woke with a start. The nightmares that plagued her sleep every night were always the same, but they never got less terrifying.

Still shaking from the nightmare, Y/N headed to the Astronomy Tower bundled in an oversized jumper. The floor of the dark, empty hallways of Hogwarts reverberated her footsteps.

When she got to the top of the Astronomy Tower, someone was already there. His white-blonde hair gave him away. Draco. Y/N hadn’t even realised he’d been let out of the hospital wing yet.

It immediately struck Y/N that something was wrong. Draco was stood on the edge of the tower, looking at the ground below.

“Draco?” She asked softly.

He whirled around. “Get back!”

“What are you doing?” Y/N asked although she thought she knew the answer.

It was a cold night, and Draco wore only an untucked shirt and trousers. Even in her warm pyjamas, Y/N felt cold so Draco must have been freezing.

“You were right. That first night we talked. There’s no way out.” Draco’s eyes glinted. “I can’t do it. He knows I can’t. He set me up to fail. He’ll kill me, and my family.”

Draco had never felt so low. He felt hopeless, like there was no point in going on any more. There seemed to be no way he could complete his task, and if he failed then Voldemort would kill him and his parents.

“Draco,” Y/N pleaded. “Don’t do this.”

The wind was particularly strong that night, both her and Draco’s hair whipped around them. There was a look in Draco’s eye. A dangerous and determined look.

“I don’t have a choice.” His voice cracked. Tears began to slide down his cheeks. His breath was ragged, and his hands were shaking. Y/N wasn’t sure if it was from fear or from the cold.

“I know. I understand not having a choice. I don’t have one either. But you have me. Please, Draco.”

Draco’s shoulders shook with repressed sobs. He was precariously balanced on the edge, one wrong move, and he would fall. That didn’t sound so bad, he had thought.

“Let me tell you a story.” Y/N said.

“Right now? I’m standing on the edge of a tower, and you want to tell me a story?” Draco said, astonished.

Y/N hoped the story would not only distract Draco but make him change his mind. “It’s a long one.”

Draco said nothing, so Y/N decided to go on.

“My mother wasn’t a Death-Eater, but she went to all the meetings in support of my father. Like your mum does. Anyway, one day, Voldemort…took a liking to her, if you get what I mean. And she rejected him because she loved my father. She was loyal to him.

When she told my father about what Voldemort had tried to do, she thought he would be on her side. He wasn’t. "Nobody denies the Dark Lord.” He said. It was his idea to have my mother killed as punishment. I was only a baby. He’d rather have a motherless child than a wife who was disloyal to the Dark Lord.

This summer, he asked me to become a Death-Eater. I said no, so he tortured me. He used the Cruciatus curse on me until I gave in. If I’d still refused, he would have killed me.“

"I didn’t know your mother was dead,” Draco said.

“That wasn’t the point of the story. The point was that my family didn’t make it out intact, but yours can. If you do this, not only will you die, but so will your mum and dad. And me.”

Draco was still crying, but he seemed calmer now.

“But if you don’t, whatever has driven you to do this, we’ll fix it. Together. I’ll help you. And your family will stand a chance.” Y/N held her hand out. “Please, Draco, take my hand.”

Draco looked down at Y/N’s extended hand.

It seemed Y/N was more like him than he thought. She also did not want this life. It was forced on her, just like it was him. He felt sorry for Y/N. At least he had a mother who loved him and a father who only wanted to do what’s best for his family. Y/N’s father was much worse. Now he understood why she never went home.

He knew he had two options: jump or take Y/N’s hand. She said she would help him, God knows he needs it. Maybe, with Y/N’s help, they could complete his task. Then, perhaps…

Slowly, he reached for her hand. His fingers interlocked with hers, warmth spreading through his hand. She cautiously guided him away from the edge, towards her.

He collapsed into Y/N’s arms and she held him as he cried.

When term started, things turned for the worst.

Firstly, seeing as every bird that Draco sent through the Vanishing Cabinet came back dead, it seemed he was going to have to try another way.

He attempted a poisoned wine for Slughorn to give to Dumbledore for Christmas but seeing as Dumbledore was still alive, it was clear it hadn’t made it to him.

Not only that, but Katie Bell was back from St Mungo’s, which spelt trouble. He knew Potter was suspicious of him and would try to extract information from Katie.

Draco supposed at least one good thing happened: Y/N didn’t ask him about the kiss. Maybe she didn’t even remember it. He wondered if that was actually a good thing or not.

As Draco headed to lunch one day, he saw Potter talking with Katie. At the sight of her, Draco felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. He didn’t want to do this, but he had no choice. It was kill or be killed.

Y/N saw Draco storm out of the Great Hall as she headed to lunch. In his wake, trailed Harry Potter. Y/N knew this was a bad sign. She began to follow Potter.

They led her to the boys’ bathroom where Moaning Mrytle tended to lurk. Y/N could see Draco crying at the sink. Her heart wrenched at the sight of him so broken.

Draco’s shoulders heaved as he struggled to control his breathing. His head felt light, and his trembling hands grappled for the sink to steady himself.

Y/N stayed hidden, watching Harry as he approached apprehensively.

“I know what you did, Malfoy,” Harry accused. “You hexed her, didn’t you?”

Draco stopped crying. He turned to look at Potter and with a swish of his wand, sent a curse flying towards him. Harry dodged it. The two boys began duelling, throwing spells and hexes at each other, bursting a sink pipe which caused the bathroom to flood.

Harry cried out: “Sectumsempra!”

Draco collapsed with a splash.

All Y/N’s inhibitions went out the window. “Draco!” Y/N cried, rushing over to the bleeding figure on the floor. “No, no, no.” She muttered over and over. She put her hands on his chest to try and stop the bleeding. Draco’s chest rose and fell at an accelerated rate.

Y/N panicked. She’d never seen a curse like this. She had no idea what counter-curse to use. She looked at her hands, coated in Draco’s blood that had seeped through his white shirt, staining it.

She went to look at Harry for help. If he knows the curse, he must know the counter-curse. Harry was nowhere to be seen. Instead, the looming figure of Snape towered above her.

“Help him!” She pleaded. “Please!”

Wasting no time, Snape began performing the counter-curse. All the blood that stained the water slowly disappeared, the deep red gashes on Draco’s chest were reduced to long red slits as his breathing returned to normal. Y/N’s hands, which were still covered in blood, shook with fear and adrenaline.

“Y/L/N,” Snape drawled. “Go and clean yourself up, I’ll take Malfoy to the hospital wing.”

-

Draco woke up in the hospital wing in immense pain. His chest had deep gashes on it, although they had already begun to heal. Unfortunately for Draco, he remembered everything that had happened.

He remembered Potter hexing him with a curse he had never heard of before. He remembered Y/N crying out his name, desperately trying to stop his bleeding. He remembered Snape healing him with a counter-curse and bringing him to the hospital wing.

“You’re healing up just fine, lovely,” Madam Pomfrey had told him. “If you’re lucky, it won’t even scar.”

The only thing Draco had on his mind was Y/N. He wanted to see her so badly. And even though he knew she wouldn’t visit him, part of him still held out hope that she would. Had his chest not been causing him so much pain, he would have snuck out of the hospital wing to see her.

“You have a visitor, Mr Malfoy.” Madam Pomfrey said.

His heart leapt at the possibility but dropped when Pansy walked in. He had been hoping for Y/N.

She never came.

-

Draco was in the hospital wing for a few weeks. Y/N was desperate to talk to him but couldn’t bring herself to visit him. She knew she should. If the Dark Lord found out she had allowed Draco to get injured, she would surely be punished.

She had overheard his friends talking about him a few days after the incident.

“I went to see Draco today.” Pansy Parkinson had said.

She was sat with Blaise Zabini, Theodore Nott and Daphne Greengrass at a table in the library where Y/N was trying to study to distract herself.

“How is he?” Blaise asked.

“He’s awake, and he says it doesn’t hurt much. Madam Pomfrey says he’s healing quite well.”

Theo asked, “Would he still not tell you what happened?"

Pansy shook her head. "He didn’t mention it, and I didn’t want to ask.”

It was a relief to Y/N to hear that he was okay. She wished she could visit him, but she couldn’t risk the fact that people could become suspicious.

She wondered if there was an alternate universe where she and Draco were friends, and neither of them was plagued by the Dark Lord. Where they could just be kids and grow up normal like everyone else. Where they didn’t fear for their life every day.

While Draco was in the hospital, Y/N’s nightmares changed. Instead of her usual nightmare, her sleep was tormented with images of Draco being hurt. These nightmares felt far too real for Y/N’s liking.

Every night while Draco was recovering, Y/N headed up to the top of the Astronomy Tower, where she would sit and think. Sometimes for a short while, sometimes until the sun came up.

She would think of her family, what could have been if Voldemort had never risen to power the first time. She would think of Draco, the boy who had no choice. He needed someone, he needed to be loved. Y/N felt deep sadness when she thought of him. She wanted so badly to help him. To save him.
