The sidewalk smells like fried wontons and it’s chilly in Hollywood. This is the 15th photo shoot I’ve done with my husband in 2 months.
LA TRAVEL TIP: if you get stuck on Santa Monica Boulevard around rush hour traffic, you might see me naked in a SmartCar, carefully plucking the sequin hem of an ‘80s prom dress out of my fishnets. Please know this was my best effort at this life.

Cynthia Kao is the kinda gal, who climbs trees in a dress, and for that, I love her dearly. We walked to Alta Vista, where a crooked weeping willow threw down the gauntlet. Both of us were childhood tree climbers. I grew up in Florida forests and Oregon woods where climbing trees was the point of going outside. But if you scale a tree in West Hollywood, you’re probably on private property, and for that, I’m absolutely not sorry.
“Visual poems” was the phrase of the day on our shoot. What’s all this living for anyways if we can’t be the freest versions of ourselves? I was gung-ho to style and shoot Cynthia the moment I found that dress. It’s so Cynthia; understated and inspiring. Think cat eyeliner and nude lip. Powerfully timeless. That’s Cynthia.

Karen raised bunnies and chickens when she was a girl. She shows me the only scars on her body; a few bunny bites when the rabbits got anxious at show. I didn’t know this when I picked overalls for our shoot. The more I learned about her Michigan roots, the more I fell in love with Karen in ‘70s overalls. I kept her makeup dewey and fresh - a rosy cheek and Bardot lip. No mascara needed on this doe-eyed creature.
We walked through Plummer Park in West Hollywood. The soaring archways and old wooden doors give the block a “Snow White” vibe. If you come at sunset, everything looks enchanted. We snapped photos under every odd door frame until the sun retired, somewhere behind Stanley.
