Yahoo announces today that it is acquiring LookFlow, an image-based machine-learning startup. The startup’s work and talent will likely be applied to Yahoo’s Flickr service.
Yahoo is also looking to expand its reach into machine learning by acquiring LookFlow. As Yahoo simultaneously improves its original content, and makes moves towards a crowdsourcing model for content sourcing, it finds itself needing better machine learning to provide a more personalized experience for its users.
Yahoo has been causing quite a few headlines recently, having rolled out a new look for its email system, making a load of cash on the IPO of a Chinese eCommerce platform in which Yahoo held a 24% stake, topping Google for the third month in a row in terms of organic web traffic, and recently grabbing New York Times columnist, David Pogue to create original content for the Yahoo network.
It’s no secret that Marissa Mayer has been shaking things up since her departure from Google. But will all of this crazy change be enough to bring Yahoo back into the modern digital market? Only time will tell.
For now, Yahoo is enjoying a massive growth, however, having doubled its stock price in the last year. So as far as shake-ups go, this one is off to a good start.
