Active ingredients:
Alkaloids - Alkaloids are substances that work very powerful. They are actually healing poisons. Plants with alkaloid as the most active ingredient may be taken only under a doctor’s supervision, as drug or only be used externally only.
In low doses, however, additional alkaloids, in synergy with other active substances, affect the medicinal properties of the plant in a positive way. Generally they work vasopressor(makingbloodpressure higher), nerve stimulating and antispasmodic.
Bitter Substances - A large part of the healing herbs tastes bitter due to the bitter substances they contain. Bitter substances are basically divided into three groups:
- The first group is that by stimulating the secretion of gastric juices and has a stimulating effect.
- The second we can best viewed with essential oils because they can by their antiseptic action also prevent inflammation and stimulate secretion of intestinal, liver and bile.
- The third group contains mostly sharp substances. We find this in plants especially spicy flavors (ginger, pepper, galanga). They promote digestion and stimulate circulation.
Etheric Oils - is a group of more than a 100 different types of substances which ease irritation or inflammation on skin, ease coughing, diuretic and antispasmodic work, stimulate stomach, intestine, liver and bile.
Flavonoids - Flavonoids comprise a large group of active substances in plants that are similar with regard to their chemical structure with one another. We know there are at present more than five thousand and their efficacy is very different.
Flavonoids support the functioning of other substances in plants.
Glycosides - Glycosides are also a huge group. They have all different effects, but they have in common that they can be split by hydrolysis, the action of water or enzymes. One of known glycosides is digitalinusedagainst heart disease. Often they also support proper digestion.
Minerals - Potassium is quantitatively the most important minerals in the plant medicine. In high doses it works diuretic. Some plants are rich in calciumandmagnesium.Both are important for bone metabolism.
Mucilage - Under mucilage we mean carbohydrate-containing substances which can swell and thicken, and can be viscous. They can soften incentives.
Mustard Oils - Mustard oils belong to essential oils. They taste sharpandstimulatethegastrointestinal tract. They have a strong antibiotic effect.
Silicic acids - Also known assilicaorsilicate crystal, promotes healthy connective tissueandhealthy hair and nails. In high doses it works diuretic(diuretic= substance that promotes the production of urine).
Saponins - Thesoap substances (saponins) dissolve mucus and thereby facilitate coughing up and spitting out. They work and strengthen the antibiotic resistance. Saponin are similar in composition to glycosides.
Tannins - Tannins are substances in plants that proteins of the skin and mucosa are able to bind, so that they can offer better resistance. They have an astringent effect and because of that are able to prevent infection by discouraging the creation of favorable breeding ground for bacteria, which have established themselves on broken skin and/or in the damaged mucosa.
Vitamins - ProvitaminAor carotene stabilizes the defenses of the immune system and promotes cell regeneration. The B vitamins play an important role in the energy metabolism. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and the resistance of the body.
