My apologies for the low audio levels- you need to boost the volume or put on headphones.

TRANSCRIPT (with images and hotlinks):
I’ve often been asked, how do you suggest that someone start training with swords?
It depends on what you’re interested in! Sword-fighting comes in many forms.
There were rich martial traditions both in the east and west, but I’ll focus on European styles. Perhaps you want to revive the martial systems preserved in ancient fighting books, or to connect with heroism in history and mythology. You might want to master the meditative art of cutting, or to fight for glory in prestigious competitions, or create dynamic fight scenes for stage and screen, or reenact epic battles with a field full of fellow warriors, or compete at full force for the glory of team and country There are so many ways and reasons to sword fight! Also, within the type of sword fighting you want to do, there are dozens of weapons and forms to study.

We have limited documentation of European martial arts, so the bulk of the historical swordsmanship revival focuses on the 14th to 19th centuries. It is especially strong around the German and Italian schools of medieval swordsmanship, since that’s where most of the martial arts records have survived. There are also strong traditions from the Spanish, French, English and Scottish schools that grew during the Renaissance. These later evolved into classical fencing, and then modern fencing as we know it today.  With these meanings of swordsmanship in mind, the first thing is to do some internet research and find out what is near you. Also, you’ll need to find a person or at the very least a tool to practice with!

You need tools to be able to train. Your sword or sword-like object should have a blunted end and any sharp burrs or splinters should be sanded off with sandpaper or rasp. These are some wooden wasters that I’ve used in the past. I now work with a unique wooden sword, designed specially for my needs. If your sword is far too heavy, it will teach you bad habits, and is potentially dangerous for anyone that you’re training with. Historically, most swords weighed between 1-3 pounds or, a kilogram. They were sophisticated, agile, and streamlined for fighting. To study historical fencing, you’ll want an agile tool that is going to give you the best response.  However if you want to fight in armored battles, the weapons you’ll use will be limited by the rules of the combat sport that you do. In combat sports, a weapon’s function always changes so that it’s safer and less lethal. Blades will be thick and rounded, suitable for cuts instead of thrusts.

For Historical European and Western Martial arts, most clubs train with wooden or nylon wasters before graduating to steel longswords, sabers and arming swords. However, rapier and side-sword students tend to go straight into using steel. You can find a range of gear at any of these shops online, through Ebay and on Amazon. It’s best to read reviews before purchasing anything.
For higher-intensity combat styles such as Heavy Medieval Battle, the International Medieval Combat Federation, and the Armored Combat League, you want to get gear that can take some punishment. Most of this equipment comes from individual blacksmiths working with clubs, so it’s best to ask around for good suppliers. However if you’re based in the US, you can get good gear at IceFalcon Armoury, or through the Facebook group, Cat’s Discount Armor Emporium.

Common sense checkpoint!

Fantasy weapons and collectibles are not made for training. Whilst having some kind of sword is better than no sword at all, just remember the steel and balance on a collectible isn’t going to be the same as a real weapon, so if you use it to hit something the metal will chip, bend or shatter. There are many suppliers out there making great equipment. There’s really no excuse to practice with a wall-hanger if you’re serious about swordsmanship.

If you want to learn historical European swordsmanship, there is a wealth of education available. The best resource we have is theWiktenauer, a wiki with a huge collection of source material. Books, DVDs and online channels like Youtube will also give you a strong base for learning at home, if you’re too far to travel to a reputable school. You can use the HEMA Alliance Club Finder to connect with groups near you. A lot of groups aren’t even listed there, but it’s still a great place to start. You can also start your own study group for your region. When you’re researching historical manuscripts, there is a lot to learn. There are many forums and social media groups who can help you make sense of them.  Forums also help you meet instructors to answer specific questions and help you grow. Also, go to events! They often have workshops, and it’s great to just turn up and meet the community, even if you’re not training yet.

If you are looking to get started without making a financial investment, all you need is a sword or sword like object and a pell (or pole) to strike. Striking the pell is a medieval training exercise that will teach you targeting and coordination needed to work with weapons.

Sword fighting is dangerous when people are dangerous. Building precision and trust with your partner is the way to develop as a martial artist. Realistically, most people starting to sword-fight just want to play and have fun. So how can you have fun and still stay safe?
1) You could find an instructor who can teach you the risks and keep you in line 2) You can use equipment that is built for play-fighting, such as foam LARP swords, rubber swords or other soft simulators. There are some lovely simulators on the market now that are very nice to work with and really well balanced. 3) You can practice and master your coordination with a sword, use a lot of control, and work with someone you trust. Hey, that’s fun, right?
To stay truly safe you need to be on the same page as your partner, no matter how much safety equipment you wear. If one of you is Jack Sparrow and the other is out to win Longpoint, then there’s going to be a problem. Remember, sword fighting is dangerous when people are dangerous. If you’re training (or even just playing around) with a partner I strongly recommend wearing safety glasses, or even sports sunglasses that wrap over your eyes. There are lots of different goggles built for extreme sports. You don’t have to go buy expensive goggles, but safety glasses are a cheap way to look after yourself. I keep several pairs with my gear at all times. As soon as you can afford a medieval helmet or fencing mask, I urge you to buy one as they’ll really help protect you during your training. You will want some protection for the back of the head, such as this leather mask overlay from SPES Historical Fencing Gear. I have more advice about simple safety gear when you’re on a budget on my ‘Sword Combat FAQs’ page. You can also check out the Facebook group, ‘HEMA Hacks’ for useful gear-crafting ideas! As you become more involved with sword training, you’ll want to get better equipment, especially when it’s time to join a group.

Sword groups come in all shapes and sizes, and we use a lot of different names to describe what we do. There’s no 'one right way for everyone’ when you start learning to use weapons, and each style will have a different approach or rule set based on the comfort level of the participants. Instead of stressing about starting with the very best group, it’s more important that you keep looking for better instructors and competitors as you go, even if it means changing groups eventually. Be aware that within the martial arts community different forms are judged very harshly, based on whether people think that they’re valid- and I’m not only talking about medieval sword sports.

There simply isn’t a one-size fits all solution when you’re learning to become a martial artist, and what feels good and engaging to one person may feel threatening and uncomfortable to another.

It can be confusing, but just getting started and trying different things really is the best way to learn your way around. Once you know the type of sword fighting you want to do, and what groups offer it, you can start trying  them out to find a good fit for you. Qualities you should look for in a group are: Open, positive attitudes to training and other groups, Committed members who come for weekly sessions or at least fortnightly, and regular sparring. Now, if the group are purely for scholarship, there should still be some form of practical testing of what you find. Another thing to look for in a good group is if they encourage members to cross-train for their own growth.

If a group restricts or actively discourages members from meeting with others, then there is something very weird going on. Every new physical experience helps a fighter grow, so it’s good to encourage cross-training at every opportunity, especially if it’s out of your comfort zone. Just remember cross-training should be a supplement to the main thing that you want to learn.  If a group are afraid to spar or fight, ”in case someone gets hurt" then it’s probably a sign that the instructors  aren’t confident in the techniques they are teaching  or their ability to control their environment Physical safety is very important, but it also needs to be balanced with actual practice. That’s the only way to improve! Swordsmanship is a wonderful art, one that you will never stop learning. Welcome to the journey.

When I do the sheet of paper on the inside that gets glued to the inside cover and the first pages (I was taught that sheet was called a standard, Idk if that’s correct or not), I usually make it slightly wider than it should be (bear with me here). So, taking the example above, instead of 9"x6", I would make it 9.25"x6". Then, with that extra, when I fold the sheet in half, I make a score mark 1/8" to the right and left of that center mark. When I glue in my standard, that extra gets tucked slightly between the signatures and the cover. I started doing that because I found that my books would either be very tight when opening them, or the standard would buckle in funny ways and wouldn’t look the greatest. After playing around with it several times, adding that extra and tucking it was the best solution I came up with.

*This is a messy tutorial, and I should warn you now, this one will really stain the pot you will end up using, so I recommend going to a thrift store or finding access to a cheap aluminum or stainless steel pot that won’t be used for cooking!

Walnut husks have been used to make a rich brown ink for decades, and it is a personal favorite of mine to make for sigil crafts and other types of writing when I need a good, solid, and practical ink to write with. I prefer making my inks by hand over buying them from stores, so having a batch of walnut ink sitting on my shelf is something to be expected when visiting my house. When making walnut ink, it is important to remember that the husks are the prime and desired part to make this ink. These husks are the fleshy, often green tennis ball-like material that surrounds the actual walnut shell. The walnut shell and walnut itself isn’t used nor is important for making ink.

Materials:

  • Black Walnut Husks
  • A large cooking pot (one that won’t be used for cooking)
  • Temporary bowl or container
  • Wooden spoon (one that won’t be reused)
  • Gallon storage bags
  • Gloves
  • Muslin or Cheese cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol or 100 proof Vodka
  • A glass storage container (to hold the final product)
  • Optional: Gum Arabic

Easy vintage wrap top

This vintage wrap top design is an easy beginners project: you don’t need a pattern, you can customise it to your own size, and despite lacking stretch it doesn’t require any zippers or buttons.

The top is made out of woven fabric and consists of a rectanglein which a holefor the head is cut. Strapsare added to the short sides of the rectangle to tie the top around your body.

There’s a lot of variationson this top: to see examples, check out these written tutorials by Sew What Gilly,Freshly Given,Gina Michele,Sadie the Sewing Machine,The Thread, and Mood Fabrics.

AssunDIYonYoutubealso has tutorials for two variations on this top: a rectangle shirt version and a butterfly shirtversion.

Given the simplicityof this top, it’s a neat way to use up old bed sheets and such.

Some examples:

(Image source 1) [ID: a person standing in a kitchen while wearing a gray wrap top with t-shirt-like sleeves and a round neckline.]

(Image source 2) [ID: a gray wrap top lying on a wooden floor. The top consists of a rectangle with a hole cut in the middle for the head. Two sets of straps, one thin and one thick, have been sewn to the sides of the rectangle.]

(Image source 2) [ID: a royal blue wrap top lying on a tiled floor. The top consists of a rectangle with a hole and a slit for the head, and thin straps at one end of the rectangle and thick straps at the other end.]

Photo two shows the same top lying on a white background. It has a drop-shaped neckhole, two sets of straps (one thin and one thick), and round bulging sleeves.]

I made one of these on a whim out of scrap fabric the other day. So comfy! So fast to sew! Definitely recommend as a casual project.

Being a hotwife

There are a few paradoxical things about this lifestyle… and one of them is that to do this successfully, a couple has to be EXTREMELY committed to each other. They must have really great communication, open, and honest about EVERYTHING. When you think about it, a husband wanting his wife to be empowered to control and seek out her own physical pleasure is literally a good definition of what a husband should be committed to having a satisfied, fulfilled wife, and doing everything he can to make that happen. Because he can’t satisfied her needs.

A reminder for the hotwives, keep the fire going. Find time to increase play time…

Hotwifing… is dessert after the really good meal that is your relationship. It’s meant to be the extra, the guilty pleasure… It does take work, it does take effort, and you will find flakes and jerks along the way. When you get it right, though… it can be amazing. So remember, you do this together… you both have a veto vote… this is a marathon and not a sprint… there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do this… it’s what works for you.

One last thing about “it works for you” part. Despite the porn and despite the way some people post on tumblr, this lifestyle whether you are a hotwife/husband or a hotwife/cuckold couple, is all about YOU. Any third/bull you decide to invite into your relationship is there for YOU, YOUR needs and wants and desires. Any time you get a bull who doesn’t want to listen, include you, follow your rules.. show him the door immediately. There will always be other men very grateful for the chance to spend a few hours with your wife trust me. Encourage her, reassure her that this is what YOU want. Have her reach out to other hotwives here on tumblr they will be the absolute best resource for her questions and concerns.

Good luck!

Great advice

How to transform her into a hotwife.

Practice tip # 2.

Use Porn — Gifs and clips to explore the boundaries of her sexuality.

This is gonna sound worst than it is but teasing out the inner hotwife in your woman will likely require a little bit of mild manipulation on your part. Remember, she has grown up in a judeo -Christian society that stigmatizes sex and neuters it of its pleasure and creativity. It’s a shame that men can walk around in public shirtless showing off washboard abs, hard pecs, and chiseled biceps, but if a woman puts on a form fitting dress and some heels she’s considered a whore. Don’t get me started. I digress.

My point with this lesson is porn will be one of the most important tools for you to use to transform your girl into a hotwife. In this lesson you will use porn ostensibly to ask her opinion about sex but covertly you will be leading her to exploring her sexual boundaries and more importantly causing her to explore them as well. You will also, and here is where the slight manipulation comes in, use porn to normalize sexual behavior that you like by suggesting everyone is doing it. For example by using gifs and clips that show anal sex, sloppy BJs, threesomes, etc., if done correctly overtime, you will not only pique her curiosity but in some cases work her into a frenzy wanting to try it. Be careful what you wish for because once she decides it’s something she really wants to experience she may do it with or without you!!

How is this done? It’s easy really. You should start to collect short clips and Gifs that demonstrate the kinds of sexual experiences that you want to open her up to. You should also collect photos of popular celebrity women, especially her favorites dressed provocatively. You will use the images you collect sporadically to not only learn what she likes and is open to do, but more importantly introduce her to new experiences and behaviors that go beyond her comfort zone. Your goal here is not to force her to do something she’s not comfortable with. Your goal here is to enlarge her comfort zone so that she is engaging in new behaviors willingly and passionately.

My ex used this technique on me. I never saw it coming and only realized it was part of a plan long after we had broken up. I had actually considered a threesome in my head because I have a hot girlfriend who told me she got drunk one night and did it with two guys. She said it was cool. I was intrigued but I didn’t tell her and I certainly would not have told my BF. It was a secret that I was too ashamed to admit or even think much about because I didn’t want to be considered a slut. However, after my boyfriend used this technique on me, not only was I admitting to him that I wanted two dicks but I was tellling him while sucking his cock and pumping a dildo in my pussy. It took time to get there but it started with him sending one gif of a hot girl getting spit roasted by two guys. He captioned with “whoa. This is hot”. He didn’t ask me to respond to it but by captioning it the way he did he removed all negative judgment by letting me know he liked it and it turned him on.

Over time he would occasionally send threesome gifs followed by questions that sometimes had nothing to do with the sex. He might refer to her clothing, shoes or hair I.e “I could see you with that haircut” or “she kinda looks like you”. He deftly put me in the scene. His comments caused me to imagine myself in her position. He also would make a lot of positive comments about the girl like “she’s a boss” or “she has a lot of confidence to do that” Jis comments were designed to make me see the woman in a positive light. I remember him asking me once what I thought it would feel like to have all that stimulation happening to my body at the same time. That question really resonated with me. His technique got me thinking more and more about threesomes. Not just thinking about them but believing that all confident, good looking girls were doing it. I began feeling left out and the thought of my hot friend being with two guys certainlybdidnt hurt my BF’s efforts. It wasn’t long before I opened up and started commenting back on the gifs and clips. I even kept a few I really liked and used them to masturbate to.

Porn is a versatile tool and can be used to advance your goal of making a hot wife in other ways too. I may address those uses in a future post. No go out and start dragging the inner slit out of your demure girl next door.

cuckies-and-cream:

How to transform her into a hot wife.

Practice Tip #1

Get her to sign up for a Tinder account.

Going from average girlfriend or wife to hotwife requires a certain change in mindset. You have to get her to see her sexuality as something good, powerful and fun. It is often disastrous to bluntly ask a girlfriend or wife to cuck you because that could be jarring and confusing. Instead approach the lifestyle obliquely. Build her self confidence. Tinder offers a great opportunity and platform to make flirting fun and easy. Tell her you want to have some fun on Tinder by creating an “alternate ego” for her on Tinder. Buy her some sexy outfits and spend a Saturday at some interesting places taking photos for her profile. Once the account is set up the two of you can spend time scrolling through guys she finds attractive (just for fun) of course. This activity alone will stimulate your cuck clit and lead to hours of stroking

It won’t be long before she and other guys start matching and “chatting”. Take it slow. Make it a game. Use these results in your sex and masturbation fantasies together. When this stage loses its titillation she’ll be ready to take another step like meet one of the guys for a date. You can watch these dates from across the bar. After each date, meet her at home and pound her wet pussy as she tells you about her date.

As her confidence builds and she is secure that these fantasies are strengthening your love and sex life , she’ll be ready to take one of these dates home and suck his cock while you watch surreptitiously. Soon she’ll be wearing anklets and riding random hot cocks for you whenever you want her to (Practice tip #2 coming soon)

hack?

that’s just garlic confit

Seriously, anyone who didn’t know about how to make this didn’t have parents/relatives who cooked.

Y’all need to pick up a cookbook.  Or watch Julia Child.

Sorry everyone didn’t grow up in a household where their caretaker cooker or knew how to cooked. Some of us didn’t grow up in a household with fresh fruits and produce. Some of us didn’t have the money to spend on a shit ton of garlic.

So how about enjoy the video instead of being a snobby bitch.

Also Julia Child would be ashamed of people behaving like that. Her whole deal was just… Making cooking accessible for people. Hell, she had a whole segment devoted to “oh, nobody taught you how to cook eggs? Here’s how you do that.” A significant part of her show was basics that people take for granted (and though the equipment may have changed somewhat, its still pretty helpful). My dad had busy parents who didn’t have the time or knowhow to cook, and he learned from watching Julia Child. French cooking made easy, here’s the basics everyone assumes you know but never taught you. And ever since, he’s had a love of cooking.

Stop putting people down for not knowing basics. Everyone is a beginner at some point or another.

I grew up in a healthy-eating cooking-skilled household and I did not know that this existed.

Just shut up and spread the TikTok

So confit is a way of cooking things, and it does marvellous things to many things.

You put stuff in oil and slow cook it. That’s confit. Garlic confit? Put it in oil and slow cook it. Chicken confit? You put it in oil and slow cook it.

(side note: confit historically means to preserve by cooking at a low temperature, (which often also meant a cure prior to cooking). So Fruitconfit is fruit that’s been cooked at a low temperature in a very concentrated sugar solution, not in oil. Nowadays, confit usually just means cooking slowly in oil outside the context of fruit and does not imply a curing process)

Compared to deep frying, almost no moisture is lost, and the flavour is not changed via the maillard process because it doesn’t happen. There is no charring or searing done to the meat/whatever you’re confitting.

For veg in general, to confit them will cause them to become ultratender, as fibers and stuff will partially break down, cell walls will collapse, but no moisture will be lost. And their flavour will mostly remain; for garlic in particular, the hot garlicky taste, the result of the allicin, which is a result of crushing or chopping the garlic, will never come out. The chemicals will break down under that amount of heat.

The oil does not terribly seep into the food by the way; it’s already saturated with water, and unless that water leaves, the oil doesn’t have a place to seep into. It’s saturated already, and the result of connective tissue breaking down, or fibres breaking down, is lessroom for fluids. Which is why a carrot can be nice and dry, go into a hot oven, and come out floppy and moist, as the water inside can no longer be held by its inside, and available, unabsorbed water = wet.

You do get a thin layer of oil coating the outside of the food.

This means that confit’ing a food item is actually very close to steaming that item at a particular temperature, or cooking it sous vide; in either case, the item does not dry out and slowly reaches its final temperature.

@brattylikestoeat the damned garlic wars was back on my dash this morning.

I like this post. Video with technique. Somebody being a dick. Other people saying don’t be a dick. Super helpful science dump that I enjoy a ton.

In French “confit” just means “preserved”; slow-cooked meat packed beneath oil or fat is the most familiar one…

…but here are a couple of other examples…

Some of the things I was told about bokashi composting when I started doing it weren’t accurate, and it was a struggle for a while. But I learned a lot after doing it for a year, and it’s actually an awesome composting option for apartments and other small and/or rented spaces.

So here’s Mod J’s Post on Why Apartment-Dwellers Should Do Bokashi Composting, with a few things I wish I’d known starting out.

What is bokashi composting?

Here’s what I understood when I started bokashi composting:

Bokashi composting is a method of composting that uses microorganisms in a powder called “bokashi bran” to speed up the composting process and eliminate the smell. Put your food scraps in the bin and layer with the bran. Once the bin is full, let it sit for two more weeks, and you’ll have good dirt ready for planting.

That’s not entirely accurate. Here’s a more accurate description:

Bokashi composting uses fermentation to turn organic waste into two components: a solid pre-compost and a liquid “bokashi tea.” The tea can be dilluted with water (a 1:100 ratio is recommended because of its high acidity) and used as a fertilizer. The pre-compost can be buried in dirt and within two weeks will become nutrient-rich compost dirt itself.

How does it work?

The bokashi method works by fermentation. Keeping it in an airtight bin allows it to ferment instead of rot, and the “bran” is supposed to help it along. (Sometimes white mold grows on the stuff inside -that’s perfectly fine and normal.) Fermenting breaks down the organic material a lot faster than ordinary composting. You end up with two components: The solid pre-compost and the liquid bokashi tea. The tea needs to be drained from the bin regularly so the excess liquid doesn’t impede the fermentation process, which is why bokashi bins have a spigot at the bottom.

Does it really have no smell?

Yes and no. If the bin or bucket you’re using has a good seal on it, you won’t smell it while the bin is closed. However, the fermenting stuff inside and the liquid that comes off it smell absolutely vile, and you willsmell it when you open the bin or drain the liquid.

Do I need to use the bokashi bran?

All the companies selling bokashi stuff say you do and it helps the process along and whatever. But never trust marketing. I’ve done full bins with a lot of the bran, some with a little bran, and some with none at all, and I’ve noticed no difference. You can try the bran and see if it works better for you, but if you don’t have any or don’t want to buy more you don’t have to.

Do I need a specific bokashi bin?

It’s definitely helpful. Bokashi bins are set up with a seal in the top to keep it airtight and seal off any smells, a bottom that tapers down to a spigot for draining off the tea, and a screen to keep the solid stuff from going all the way to the bottom and clogging up the spigot. You could absolutely build your own, but I recommend a similar setup just for ease of use.

What can I put in my bokashi bin?

Anything you would put in regular compost - vegetable scraps, leftovers, eggshells, etc. Moldy food you forgot about in the refrigerator is also great, and since bokashi uses fermentation instead of rotting, even cooked meat can go into the bin. I’ve thrown in everything from paper napkins to whole zucchinis to a compostable toothbrush (although admittedly, that last one took closer to four weeks to fully break down). There’s no need to worry about ratios of anything - the fermentation will do the work for you.

Why use bokashi?

Turn foods scraps into dirt that you can use to grow more food even while living somewhere you can’t have a compost pile. It’s faster than regular compost (a full bucket takes two weeks of fermenting and two weeks of being buried until it’s done), there’s no smell when the lid is closed, and a lot of bins will fit under a kitchen sink. It’s great for apartments, rentals, and small spaces.

The one downside is that it costs a little more to buy a bokashi bin than it does to just throw some old vegetables in a pile. (I got my bin on eBay for about $50, and many of the name-brand ones are more expensive.) But I live in an apartment, and bokashi composting lets me still have the benefits of turning my food waste into good dirt that I can use to grow more food without needing a yard to put in a full compost bin. That makes it worth the investment for me.

I luckily haven’t had to deal with much chronic pain or hand pain yet, especially with regards to baking (crochet is another story). That said, these look like some pretty solid tips! There’s also some in the comments section.

As this link nears five hundred notes, I’m just… very quietly touched at how many people are sharing it. Whether they need it themselves (or think they will someday), or know someone else who might need it, the fact that all of them are sharing the sentiment of “I want the people who love doing this thing to be able to keep doing the thing that they love” is… yeah. It makes me happy.
