We hear so much about how Tian Qi and Yue Mi raised Shang Gu that it’s easy to forget Zhi Yang did too.

I love this scene so much partly because of Zhi Yang and Yue Mi reverse psychologising Shang Gu to make her become Bai Jue’s student

but also because it shows, despite the fact she’s alway in some kind of trouble with him, she has absolute faith in his affections for her.

Which makes his actions later hurt even more. I don’t doubt he loves her but he definitely puts her responsibility towards the three realms before her own happiness and safety. Just like Bai Jue does before he realises the terrible mistake he made.

Ahhh Shang Gu’s first look at what a cold hearted dick Bai Jue can be

It’s interesting how Shang Gu is one of the only four “true gods” born on the heavenly platform and Bai Jue, also one of those four, hasn’t bothered to even meet her once in ten thousand years.

Lol the amount of judgement in that one line

I love Shang Gu. Kudos for the actress for making me adore her for all her arrogance and mischief. Or maybe, like the other characters, that’s partly why I love her

Yes I’ve gone right back to the beginning to watch my show of the year again.

Watching the dynamic between these three is hilarious.

Zhi Yang and Tian Qi bringing up Shang Gu is like doting aunt vs strict aunt while Bai Jue is the uncle you hear about while growing up but never actually meet.

I don’t know what order this trio were “born” or hatched but Zhi Yang exudes eldest child to me. He somehow got left with all the responsibility of running the three realms while Tian Qi drinks and spoils Shang Gu and Bai Jue lives like some sort of monk on a mountain. The man’s body language screams “I am very stressed”

bittergloss:

i am legit sobbing this cannot be happening……………

bittergloss:

GOD. im gonna go lie down

Bai Jue is so cruel for this. The same way only a being who isn’t human can be cruel. I love how the show illustrates the difference between him and his shadow self

Shang Gu, I like you. I’m already satisfied now that I’ve told you. You can turn me down, but you can’t keep me away. No matter if it’s ten thousand years, or a hundred thousand years, I insist on loving you and haunting you until death.

Bai Jue, you’ll regret it. One day, you’ll regret it.

This memory of Tian Qi’s, in the moment when he’s seemingly carrying out the worst of betrayals is where (in my first watch through) he started on his journey to being my favourite character of the show.

It’s an idyllic image of him playing hide and seek with her when she’s young — maybe even just after she first appeared on the Heavenly Platform. I assume it was that early because she seems to be not even able of speaking yet. The person who met her first, who spent time with her everyday, before she was even capable of speech, was Tian Qi.

I kept remembering this image and what it represented through the whole series. The emotion in it is what drives him and stays constant for thousands of years.

Just look at all this character development for the female protagonist

So this is where the car Bai Jue started rolling downhill becomes impossible for him to stop. He started instilling his own values in Shang Gu back before he grew to have feelings for her; pride in her own abilities, the importance of taking responsibility, justice.

And now that she’s taken on those values and is putting herself on the line for them — he’s starting to draw back. We see this when he makes it easy for her to back out of going to the nether world. Unfortunately for him, it’s too late. She’s already fully embraced putting the three realms above her own safety.

The scene in which my heart breaks into a million pieces. Everything from the acting, the writing, the choice of music in this scene is *chef’s kiss* perfect.

It’s harder watching this the second time around because now I know Tian Qi means this and exactly what he’ll do even after he gets rejected by the woman he loves. This man isn’t lying.

Shang Gu, I like you. I’m already satisfied now that I’ve told you. You can turn me down, but you can’t keep me away. No matter if it’s ten thousand years, or a hundred thousand years, I insist on loving you and haunting you until death.

Shang Gu has the best case of big dick energy I’ve seen in a heroine in a while which is why she’s so fun to watch. Bai Jue has taught her a few moves and she went from thriving off her own cowardice to picking fights with demons and laughing about how great she is

This made me crack up. Bai Jue is literally holding up the sky for her and this girl is too dumb to notice. I love it when Shifus take lightening trials for their disciples

Ahhh my heart can’t take this!! The chemistry is on fire

Bai Jue is a fascinating character the second time watching this because of how ruthless he is — to Shang Gu and himself — despite loving her. We see early signs of this here. He’s falling for her but it doesn’t stop him putting her in danger or reminding her of the heavy burden she has to carry. This is the fundamental difference between how he loves her and Tian Qi loves her.

I love how Bai Jue starts this show with the attitude of — “I’m not going to spoil Shang Gu. I’m not like you people.” And then one episode later we get this

They are so cute

A lot of these little moments illustrate how Zhi Yang, Yue Mi, Tian Qi and now Bai Jue love Shang Gu and love spoiling her in material ways but the real test is when they have to pick between Shang Gu and her responsibility to the three realms.

I do wonder if they doted on her so much while young because they guessed the shit show she would have to face even if they didn’t know how bad it would get. They’re all much older than her after all.

Completely forgot when watching this the first time around that Tian Qi was the one who gave Bai Jue the idea of carving a stone bracelet for Shang Gu. That makes the significance of it throughout the series hurt even more

XDRAMAsX’s 2021 Drama Review

I dropped Song of Youth within 30 minutes after realising the show wasn’t the female ensemble it promoted itself to be, but Lamu Yangzi’s imitation of Luoshen is just too hilarious not to post.

2021 seemed to be a year where the drama in C-ent was more gripping than the fictional stories playing out onscreen, but I still went through a fair share of interesting television shows. Which ones did…
