Whump Awakening Tag Game

When did you first discover that your love of dark, whumpy stories was unusual?

I found that out when I was probably 8 or 9 and I was playing with blocks. My dad asked me what I was making. “A prison!” I said happily. He gave me a funny look and said “You know, most kids would build a house.”

I had a Huge TM (in my 6 yo eyes, of course) set of animal figures, most of them the most popular african ones, lions, elephants, giraffes etc. They had a peaceful settlement that was invaded by Dog Villains (another set of figures, all dogs the same size as lions and tigers from the first one - I was terribly afraid of dogs when I was six) who quickly decided to kill my entire settlement as an offering to the gods so that the crops would be good next year. One savannah animal, by fav blorbo, a lioness, offered herself, arguing a willing sacrifice would be worth more, and the rest of the captured animals could be turned into slaves, but stay alive (a lion sacrificing themselves? Narnia, you say? Maybe so…)

Yeah, in retrospect, that was a rather whumpy thing to imagine.

Also, I had a pretty old and morbid book on pre-colonialism South American civilisations and there was this one pic of a priest supposedly removing a still-beating heart out of the victim’s chest - I could stare at that picture for hours.

when i realized liking whump was unusual: idk if it was the first but it’s the first i remember, in fifth grade i casually doodled a man chained to a wall on a test that i had finished and my teacher called me over and was like… what is this? and i explained to her that he was chained to a wall, and she was like why? and i told her i wasn’t sure, i was just thinking about it. she fully was like okay cool cool and never mentioned it again, but i didn’t do any more of those doodles :)

when i realized liking whump wasn’t so unusual: i went from fifth grade through high school thinking it was pretty fuckin weird but just going with it. then i wrote this fanfic where i was like hey this is completely anonymous, im just going to go full man-pain in this bitch, and it immediately became WILDLY popular. i remember, even at that age, being like this is kind of a social experiment to see how many people really are into this shit. and i remember learning then that its… it’s gotta be damn near everyone. people are just in different phases of willing to admit it ;)

moral of the story is love what you love and even if a few people make ya think you’re weird for it, you’re probably not :) tagging whoever wants to share.
