April 30, 2022 - Rufous-throated Antbird (Gymnopithys rufigula)

Found in northeastern South America, in parts of Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela, these antbirds live in rainforests. They follow army ants, capturing insects as they flee the swarms. Their cup-shaped nests are made of dry palm leaves and other fibers in tree cavities or stumps. Females lay clutches of two eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.

May 5, 2022 - Rio Branco Antbird (Cercomacra carbonaria)

This antbird is found on river islands and in dense forests along the Branco River in northern Brazil and into the extreme southwest of Guyana. Individuals, pairs, and small family groups feed on insects and other invertebrates in tangled vines and other dense vegetation. Their breeding behaviors are not well known, but nests have been found in August. They are listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN due to their extremely small range and small population which is threatened by deforestation for cattle ranching and soy production.
