Today in 1683: Princess Anne, the future Queen Anne, marries George, Prince of Denmark.

The marriage took place in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace. Although it was an arranged marriage for political allegiances, the couple were happy and committed to each other throughout their marriage, despite suffering hardships over the loss of children.

This portrait of Queen Anne by Antonio Verrio forms the centrepiece of his painted ceiling in the Queen’s Drawing Room at Hampton Court Palace, 1703-05. Queen Anne is depicted as Justice, with scales in one hand and a sword in the other.
