Taylor-Joy describes herself as “a mutt of different nationalities”. Born in Miami to a Zambian-British-Spanish mother and Scottish-Argentinian father, then schooled in London, she’s admitted to feeling like she doesn’t fit in anywhere: “I was too English to be Argentine, too Argentine to be English, too American to be anything.”

I wonder if her penchant for period roles might be partly because she feels like she was born out of time too? “I feel like I was born off the planet,” she laughs.

_{I did this really weird thing where I wrote a whole bunch of commandments and rules for myself, one new year. One of them was to be your own best friend, your own savior, your own mother. You need to show up for yourself. So, when something upsets you or wriggles your sense of self, wait a second and ask, “where is this coming from? Why do I feel this way? Is it actually a real feeling or is it a feeling that society’s put onto me? Or, did that come from that one person that said that to me like seven years ago? Let’s rationalise this!” It takes up a lot of time, but it does work. (Interview for Glamour UK (november ‘20)}

When Beth and I aligned, I’d had a really crazy year, because I made Emma, had a day off, then I did Last Night in Soho, had a day off, and then it was The Queen’s Gambit. For the first time, I was like, “I need to take care of myself in a very aggressive way, because otherwise I’m not going to be able to do this well.”}
