The Grayson Highlands State Park is such a unique place, from open mountain grasslands and streams to steep rocky outcrops and herds of wild ponies, there are so many wondrous sights to see and experience!

The Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia is home to over 150 ponies that naturally maintain the grassy balds. If you visit, please keep in mind to leave only footprints, take only photos, and try to remember that the ponies are wild so refrain from feeding/petting them. Hard to resist those sweet faces, but it is better for them to receive as little human interaction as possible.

Established in 1965, the Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia spans over 4500 acres. There are a variety of hiking and equestrian trails to explore in the park including a 4.5 mile portion of the Appalachian Trail.

Herds of ponies help to maintain the mountain grasslands at Grayson Highlands State Park in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. We’re so glad we were finally able to visit the wild ponies!

628 Miles To Go …  Southbound out of the Green Mountains, thru the Berkshires, and down the Taconic Range. I’ll summit a few of the state’s highest peaks, drop down to the lowest elevation on the trail, and cross the Hudson River on the Bear Mountain Bridge. I’ll cavort with the bears of New Jersey along the Kittatinny Ridge to Delaware Water Gap. I’ll pass thru the Palmerton superfund site, tip-toe thru the infamous rocks there, stay at the old Doyle Hotel in Duncannon, and cross the Cumberland Valley. I’ll blast thru Maryland, and get to Harper’s Ferry hopefully before the leaves start falling back home …
