I may have waxed lyrical on the hazy, dreamlike qualities of F. Holland Day’s beautiful outdoor nudes before, and I know many of you must prefer clarity over atmosphere, yet I cannot help once more admiring the grainy, glowing softness in these turn of the century pictures which gives them such enduring charm.
The drawing of a bow produces an interesting and powerfully taut pose, this example is sadly bereft of its correct credits. I have other archers collected together here.
Like the George Henry Seely photograph posted last week, which was so immediately popular among my followers and their followers and so on ad infinitum, Frank Eugene’s ‘Archer’ of 1914 shares the soft focus, the addition of a prop to create a scene instead of the usual academic pose, and subtle use of nudity for aesthetic appeal rather than eroticism.
Taken in Hungary circa 1920, this picture by E. V. Kankovszky is just a little later than those I like to concentrate on, but I could not help but include it; I do not think you will mind too much as it is such a beautiful image.
Trying out flat colours for now, though I can’t wait to get into shading/blending/painting <3 Enjoying art & drawing again feels really good, no matter how tiny the steps I make are.
