Aroqueer

An identity for anyone on the aro spectrum whose aromanticism is the most prominent or most well understood part their orientation. The ‘rest’ of an aroqueer person’s orientation can’t or won’t be defined more specifically than “queer”. Aroqueer is not simply aro + queer, as the aromantic aspect factors into the queer aspect - the aromanticism is part of the queerness, and the two are inseparable.
Aroqueer is for both people who can’t define their orientation beyond “aro” and “queer” and for people who can define their orientation further but refuse to.

About the flag

The arrowheads serve as both aromantic symbolism and queer symbolism, as they mimic the shape of the chevrons on the queer flag.

Colour symbolism:
Green - The same green used in the aromantic flag’s first stripe, and is used to represent aromanticism, the aro community, and the entire aro spectrum.

Light yellow - Finding joy in challenging amatonormativity. Yellow is a colour associated with happiness and yellow roses are associated with friendship and are an aro community symbol.

Lavender purple - Queer identity, the queer community, and queer aromanticism.

Can I identify with this as an allosexual aro? Because my aromanticism is way more important to me than who I happen to find sexy.

Absolutely yes. Alloaros, aroaces, non-SAM aros, and any other aro who is also queer can identify as aroqueer. Aroqueer is about prioritising (and forcing people to acknowledge) your aromanticism without leaving your queerness behind.

I made it as a way to simplify the description of my identity without denying the complexity that might be there. Aroqueer implies and acknowledges complexity whilst actively denying onlookers an in-depth explanation because that shit can be personal and you don’t owe it to anyone.

I made the aroqueer flag out of some pretty paper in my journal to celebrate ASAW.
