#around the world in 80 days

LIVE

Although I persist in not understanding why one would make an Around the World in 80 Days adaptation and not use the majority of the plot points from the book, as a longtime Nellie Bly fan and a shorter-term Elizabeth Bisland fan I am DELIGHTED that the newest adaptation decided to make their non-book girl character a female reporter. If they must make such sweeping changes they could do worse than pay homage to the real-life women who bravely went where not even Phileas Fogg went before.

Explain to me why they chose to film this scene exactly like they’re in a poly relationship where two of them are panicking about their lover being poisoned? It’s as if the people in charge of the visual side of things read the script and went “They should all date” and just did their own thing.

Around the World in 80 Days S01E05 part 5 of 5

Fogg (David Tennant) has been unjustly accused of stealing. Denied a trial, he’s instead told he’s to be flogged at noon.

While he’s waiting for the punishment to be carried out, his friends try to secure a pardon from the governor for him.

In the meantime, he sees the results of the lash on the back of one of his fellow prisoners. He’s taken to the yard where he takes off his shirt and is chained to the whipping post, where a very handsome and masculine flogger is ready to go to work with a cruel-looking bullwhip.

His friends arrive with the pardon, but not before our hero receives one stroke of the lash as the clock strikes noon. The pardon presented, the flogging stops and he’s set free but he’s clearly shaken by his ordeal.

Aside: given how long it’s taken me to post this frankly excellent scene, I deserve to be flogged at noon too;-)

Buster Keaton played a frontier train conductor in 1956 movie, ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ - “I must have been on the screen a minute and a half, and I was three weeks in Colorado on location to do it.”  I’m sure it was no hardship, playing with trains again!
