Behind the Scenes of The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith - Part Four

From Benjamin Cook’s interview with Nigel Havers (and David Tennant) from DWM 416

Benjamin Cook: Do you ever watch yourself on TV?

Nigel Havers:  I haven’t for a long time. I still don’t know how to operate my bloody Sky Plus thing.

BC:  Earlier today, I spotted Tommy [Knight] and Daniel [Anthony] showing you how to work your mobile phone!

NH: Yeah, I’ve got an iPhone.  So does David [Tennant].  He has an application on his phone that simulates a -”  [In walks David…]

David Tennant: What’s that?

NH: Oh. We were talking about phones.  Didn’t you say that you can cock yours and it fires - ?

DT:  No, no, that’s Steven Moffat.  He has everything on his iPhone. He can turn his into a lightsaber, he drinks pints of beer from it…”

BC:  Some people - they’re called killjoys - would say that’s a bit pointless.

NH: No. You see, when you’re filming, you’ve so much dead time, it gives you things to do.

DT: Yeah, it’s great.  It’s a whole leisure centre! I’ve got a spelling game on mine

NH: Have you, David?

DT:  I thought it would educate me, but all I do is find three-letter words.  Hundreds and hundreds of three-letter words.  That isn’t quite the point. I’m looking for that elusive 13-letterer.

NH: Or the longest word in England

DT: I wouldn’t go that far. I’ll settle for antidisestablishmentarianism

Behind the scenes of The Lazarus Experiment (Part Seven)

Excerpts from The Fact or Fiction article in DWM 519

The starting-point for the sixth episode of the third season of the 21st century series was a two-word phrase given by showrunner Russell T. Davies to first-time Doctor Who writer Stephen Greenhorn: Mad Scientist.  Over the course of several drafts, in which Greenhorn’s ‘Professor Anger’ became a ‘Professor Lazarus’, it mutated into a Marvel Comics-style ‘supervillain origin’ story: “This is unashamedly Dr Octopus,” Davies told those who gathered for the episode’s tone meeting in August 2006, “a mad scientist’s experiment gone wrong.”

Fittingly, then, the story went under the working title The Madness of Professor Lazarus - but the eventual title appears to acknowledge a debt to the original BBC sci-fi thriller, The Quatermass Experiment (1953), remounted in 2005 as a live BBC Four broadcast featuring both David Tennant and Lazarus actor Mark Gatiss among its cast. That original Experiment, of course, ended with its scientist hero confronting the hideously mutating remains of a once-proud man within the Gothic environs of a magnificent London church…

Behind the Scenes of Planet of the Dead - Part 20

Excerpts from Doctor Who The Complete History:

While shooting took place in Cardiff, David Tennant was attending the Radio Times covers party at Claridge’s in London when he was approached by Lee Evans, who eagerly explained that he had been cast in Doctor Who at three days’ notice.  David returned to a sodden Cardiff in the early hours of Wednesday 21 to start work on Planet of the Dead, commencing with a special hour-long rehearsal session with Michelle Ryan conducted by James Strong from 4pm at the St David’s Hotel.  The main shoot was scheduled from 6pm to 5am back at the Butetown tunnel, with Doctor Who Confidential and BBC Interactive present… plus David kept his own video diary updated during the rain-lashed night, chatting to Tracie Simpson and John Bennett among others.

Time Crash - Behind the Scenes - Part Six

Excerpts from Benjamin Cook article in DWM #389:

This is 2007′s Children in Need effort from the Doctor Who team here at Upper Boat Studios, in Cardiff.  Filming on a Sunday (Peter is starring in Monty Python musicalSpamalotin the West End during the week), this mini-episode is enough to make grown men wet themselves with excitement, featuring not one but two incarnations of the Doctor.  “Look around,” grins Phil Collinson, the producer. “We’re all frothing at the mouths.”

“It’s Doctor Who!” enthuses Steven Moffat, one of the frothing fanboys watching from the sidelines. He’s also the writer of this scene.

“Ha hah! This is so good,” exclaims David [Tennant], another frother.  He should know better than to get this excited. He doesn’t know better. He’s proud to be frothing. “I’m loving it,” he tells DWM. “It’s incredible.”

Even the returning hero, Sir Peter of Davison, is ever so slightly in awe.  “It looks just like the toy,” he marvels, inspecting the TARDIS set. It’s grander than it was in his day, less like dying and waking up in Ikea.  “And I speak as someone who’s had to put together the toy,” he adds.

“Awwww, I love the toy,” cries David.  “It makes all the noises as well, doesn’t it?”

Cripes, they’re off again.

Behind the Scenes of Partners in Crime - Part 9

From a Radio Times interview with David Tennant and Catherine Tate (5-11 April 2008)

Radio Times: Is Donna as mouthy as before?

Catherine Tate: Everyone assumed she was a one-off - myself included - but now she has a whole season to have a story arc. So none of the feistiness has been lost, but you also get to tap into a different side of her - a much more vulnerable side.  She experiences all the things she sees in a very human way. So there are episodes where she lands on a planet, sees an alien, and just goes, “Oh my God!”

David Tennant: She keeps his feet on the ground a bit. She probably challenges him a bit more. The Doctor had a slight tendency to be a little…

Catherine Tate:Pompous?

David Tennant: Pompous! [Laughs] But she cuts though that.

Radio Times: Does Donna bring out a different side of the Doctor?

David Tennant: I think they’re good for each other. They’re good at limiting each other’s less appealing excesses.  There is an equality. It’s not quite teacher-and-pupil, which in a sense the Doctor and Martha and the Doctor and Rose were. There’s an ease with each other.
