INTRODUCING OUR NEW HERITAGE TRAINEES!As part of the Royal Academy’s 250th anniversary celebrations

INTRODUCING OUR NEW HERITAGE TRAINEES!

As part of the Royal Academy’s 250th anniversary celebrations and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the RA has taken on three trainees to work throughout different departments during 2017/18. My name is Patrick and I am based within Learning, there is also Wes in Digital and Masa in Collections, I am sure you will hear from them soon.

These first five weeks have been such a whirlwind, meeting so many new wonderful and interesting people and having the opportunity to explore the Royal Academy in ways that I have never done before. As a group of trainees we were given an in-depth introduction program that other members of my team have been extremely jealous of, I have delved deep into the archive and rummaged through the silver collection traditionally donated to the RA by new academicians.

Sometimes the RA can look, – to an outsider, – like a stalwart of the artistic establishment, an inaccessible and intimidating place for certain groups. However, being based within the learning team I have been able to witness first-hand several access groups, which have been developed over years closely with community groups to help gain access to hard to reach audiences. A brilliant example of this is the monthly Art Club, where homeless people come together to make and discuss art. It showed me how these groups are more than just about the art, they help participants to feel valued, accepted and included. It allows them to build the confidence to increase their social activity, which can go on to help people get back on their feet. Hearing stories of past attendees getting jobs as a direct influence of Art Club is inspiring and hopefully something I can continue to be involved in throughout my traineeship.

Throughout the year I hope to keep you all informed of my progress and the activities I will be involved with for the 250th anniversary celebrations. This year is going to go fast and I cannot believe I have already been here for five weeks!!!

Take care all,

Patrick

Our team of volunteers paid visits to our storage facility this week to photography a wide array of objects related to the history of the RA and the practice of making art. One highlight was this set of fire buckets complete with RA branding! Before the age of fire extinguishers, these proud red buckets were dotted around Burlington House and the RA Schools.

Some artwork my students made before school got shut down. My heart hurts, I miss these kids.

Clay can be overwhelming. Honestly it’s been one of the things that has taken me the most years to try to figure out how do I manage this. So here are my tips from what I have learned after 7 years.

First- use CARDBOARD for kids to put their clay on while working. Helps keep your tables clean, clay doesn’t stick to it, and won’t stick to the tables. Seriously. Works great.

Second- ZIP LOCK BAGS. Ok this should probably be number one because it is legit the BEST. Get yourself some gallon bags. Write kids’ names on them. Everyone gets a bag. They put their projects and any small amount of extra clay in the bag at the end of the period. The bag keeps the clay moist for over a week + and really helps with organization!

Carts, if you have them! Trays, if you have them!

I have each table put their clay onto one tray– easy to collect and distribute. Then put the trays onto a cart. If you don’t have a cart, shelving units like: https://www.amazon.com/Furinno-99557BK-GY-Turn-N-Tube-Multipurpose/dp/B007KLYD46/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=plastic+shelving&qid=1554674471&s=gateway&sr=8-4 are great. I have purchased several of these before, they’re pretty sturdy, easy to put together & move.

Other tips, small containers (like take out containers, small jars) are great to use for slip. Just put a chunk of clay in the container with some water and mix. Put the containers in a bag to keep from drying out.

BABY WIPES AND LOTION. Honestly, baby wipes are my favorite for so many reasons. I use them all the time for clean up. Sink washing is just such a mess. Too many kids at the sink at once. Sure, some kids prefer the sink, and they usually go after a baby wipe, but baby wipes help so much. I buy baby wipes in bulk. I stand at a cart/table and kind of monitor/control– kids bringing me excess amounts of clay (small amounts can go into their bags), I give kids wipes for their hands (3-4, sometimes more), then after they wipe their hands, they can also wipe the tables with them!, kids putting clay into bags, bags onto trays, bringing me the containers of slip (I put them into bags), kids putting clay tools back into a container at their table, kids stacking cardboard. After kids wipe, they can either go to the sink, get more wipes, and then they get lotion.

I collect the trays and put them on a cart or a shelf in the closet to keep them organized by table number.

Lastly, you need this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073XZFHGR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

to cut your clay. Seriously, it’s the greatest. The ones with the wooden handles suck. I tried making my own, using regular fishing wire, other wire….. no… just get this. It’s $10. Seriously, best $10 I have ever spent. No more hurting my hands cutting clay.

What other tips do you want to learn about?

I really should post more. The amount of cool stuff my kids have done this year is insane. I love teaching digital art. Digital paintings, 2 point perspectives, creating buildings, a huge art show that 200 people came out to- we had the newspaper write about us and people write letters to the editor about it….. pretty cool. I don’t feel super appreciated by my admin this year, but I do feel appreciated by my kids & their families. Seeing their work… man they make me proud.

POST IT!

Deadline: Sunday, 8 May 2022. Three years after the World Collage Atlas project, COUPEE launches a brand new project for World Collage Day. A huge exposition of hundreds of small collages, made by artists all over the world. But to achieve this they need you to spread the word, and to make lots of tiny Post it collages. The submitted collages will be exhibited the weekend of World Collage Day at de Krook, Ghent, Belgium’s public library and new tourist hotspot. Afterwards, a selection of the collages will be printed as Post-It blocs and the collection will be available for other expositions worldwide! MORE

Corporeal Gestures

at the Portland State University School of Architecture in Portland, Oregon, USA through 29 April 2022. In 2019, collage artist Clive Knights put out an international call for submissions from collage artists, asking them to respond to nine “muses”, characterized as the bodily necessities of breathing, nourishing, sleeping, discharging waste, procreating, resisting the earth’s pull, communicating, aging and dying. The result is an exhibition of work by more than 100 collage artists from twenty-one countries. The work presents a diverse response to the ways in which our actions, rhythms, relationships and shared experience of being alive are both predetermined and made possible by the modicum of matter borrowed from the world that constitutes each of our bodies. The project challenged collage artists to consider how one’s body is activated in the world–acting, gesturing, making–amidst the shared rhythms pertaining to our common, mortal predicament in a single, unfolding cosmos. MORE

The Art of Jean LaMarr

at the Nevada Museum of Art through 29 May 2022. “The Art of Jean LaMarr” is a major retrospective of the work of one the most influential Native American artists practicing today. The exhibition presents more than 100 paintings, prints, and sculptures spanning five decades of the art and activism of Jean LaMarr (b. 1945), whose melding of post-modern eclecticism and Native American motifs and subject matter has affirmed the dignity of Native American women, addressed the legacy of colonialism, and above all sounded a ringing “rejection of the idea of the vanished American Indian.” MORE

Collazine: Artists at Risk Fundraiser

14 May 2022 | Collazine | Online. Wars, pandemics, climate change. The world seems to be an unsafe place to live in today and when we think that the only refuge may be in a better future, we realize that we are already living it, and should navigate it with care. It’s not possible to erase the past, but let’s imagine we have a blank sheet ready to rewrite a new story lived by moments of quiet, optimism and trust. We imagine a different future, but one so close that it can almost be touched. On the occasion of World Collage Day, Collazine will launch a fundraiser in support of Artists at Risk, a non-profit organization that since 2013 has been assisting artists who are politically vulnerable and are fleeing oppression and war in 26 locations, in 19 countries around the world. Artists at Risk hosts persecuted artists, writers, curators, critics and scholars by facilitating their safe passage from their countries of origin, hosting them at Artists at Risk Residencies and curating related projects. On rapso.org, unpublished collages made by ten international artists, inspired by the theme, a prompt to create a candid space in pursuit of a different future, will be made available for purchase. All proceeds will be donated to Artists at Risk. MORE

Reveal What’s Beneath

Brooklyn, New York, USA. Meghan Larimer’s collages are her visual diary, interpretations of thoughts and observations, therapy for her wild range of feelings, and a visualization of the poetic narrative in her head. They vary from whimsical to violent, dreamy and surreal. Inspired by the unintentional collage of New York and other cities, Larimer writes, “The street art and walls tell a story of the transient art that is constantly changing with every tag, poster, and attempt to cover it all up with a fresh coat of paint, only to be peeled away to reveal what’s beneath. I try to replicate this beautiful process in my work.” MORE

WORLD COLLAGE DAY - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Belles Lettres: Collage in the Age of Covid Exhibition

12-22 May 2022 | Scratch Art Space | 67 Sydenham Road
A group of 10 Sydney-based collage students are showing their work with an exhibition opening on World Collage Day. During the Covid pandemic, Australia closed its borders and experienced one of the harshest lockdowns in the world. During this unique and uncertain time, students of the WEA, Sydney (Workers Educational Association, est. 1913.) were delivered a wonderful online weekly collage class by visual arts teacher, Brendan Vivian Smith. Over these weeks of stay-at-home orders the group created collage with images, materials, and papers that were at hand. The class also provided structure to the week and vital social connection. Collectively the group created new horizons, stories, and imaginings that brought beauty into their lives and kept their world large. This exhibition celebrates that work. MORE
