Jar with Feather Motif, Maria Martinez, 1956,Art Institute of Chicago: Arts of the Americas

San Ildefonso pottery Maria Martinez accommodated the tastes of the wealthy collectors and tourists in new productions based on traditional methods and forms, but also contemporary in appearance. Her distinctive black pots, which resulted from experiments with firigin and glazes, attracted many collectors, and soon she and her husband, Julian, produced the famous black-on-black ware almost exclusively.— Revised from J. Barter, Window on the West (2003), pg. 129 Gift of Edward H. Weiss

Pectoral, Maya, 200,Art Institute of Chicago: Arts of the Americas

This elegant chest ornament would have been part of a ruler’s ceremonial regalia. In Maya society, as among other Amerindian peoples, a ruler’s attire indicated rank, religious function, and place of origin. Such dress was highly regulated, and only members of the nobility wore jade and other greenstones as an expression of their wealth and high status. Moreover, these rare and valued stones were considered to be inherently sacred and powerful. By wearing jade regalia, kings directly associated themselves with the youthful green maize plant and life-giving blue-green waters. Ada Turnbull Hertle Fund

Bowl with a Figure Holding a Macaw, Hopi, 1400,Art Institute of Chicago: Arts of the Americas

The bisected design of this bowl interior features a field of paint spatter contrasting with a standing figure holding a macaw in his outstretched hand. The figure depicts a ritualist wearing an embroidered kilt and a pair of feathers in his hair. He is further ornamented with polychrome paint that covers his face, torso, and arms. The red color and long tail feathers of the bird indicate that it is a scarlet macaw, a type of parrot traded from Mexico. These birds were symbolically associated with the power of the sun and agricultural abundance, and their brilliant feathers were highly valued in ceremonial contexts. Modern-day Pueblo communities leave prayer sticks adorned with feathers at specific sacred places in the landscape. These ritual objects are offered as prayers to the gods and the natural elements, asking them to bring rainclouds to regenerate the crops in the cultivated fields. Gift of Edward and Betty Harris
