As far as Marg was concerned, the most important criterion was that the garden respect its past. “It needed to be true to the home, so all the plants we brought in were exotics rather than natives,” she says, noting that these included murrayas, daylilies, liriopes, irises, hellebores and magnolias.

Creating the garden has been a 30-year pursuit for Marg and Rob, who share the home with their two adult daughters, Alison and Lucy and their golden retriever, Molly. “When we bought the property, the garden was practically nonexistent,” says Rob. “Just a couple of trees and five camellias in an otherwise barren space.”
