Alors, ça fait une éternité que j’avais parlé de faire un article sur le sujet et donc, je me lance. Je suis un peu une noob en convention mais j’avais envie de vous parler de ces deux conventions que j’ai eu l’occasion de faire : le TGS Springbreak (2 éditions : 2016 et 2018) et le TGS en décembre 2017.

Tout d’abord, je n’ai que des photos du TGS Springbreak pour une raison toute simple : l’affluence du TGS était telle que je n’ai pas pris de photos avec l’appareil de peur de l’abîmer. Donc les illustrations de l’article seront uniquement du TGS Springbreak.

Alors, commençons par la première convention que j’ai faite qui était le TGS Springbreak de 2016. Je venais tout juste d’arriver à Toulouse et déçue de ne pas pouvoir participer au Geek Days de Lille, j’ai décidé de prendre ma place pour le TGS. Vêtue d’une veste panda, je suis partie à la conquête de ma première convention. Le TGS Springbreak se déroule à Labège au centre Diagora et dure pendant deux jours, un samedi et un dimanche. Rien de très innovant, j’ai l’impression que c’est la plupart du temps comme cela sauf sur des événements de plus grande ampleur. En 2016, l’une des têtes d’affiche était un méchant (oui, je pense qu’on ne peut pas dire un héro dans ce cas précis) de mon enfance : Apophis de Stargate SG1. Mon père, grand maître de la sacro sainte télécommande, nous empêchait de regarder un autre programme si Stargate était à l’antenne, et ce, même si c’était la 150ème fois qu’il voyait l’épisode. Donc autant vous dire que je suis plutôt au taquet sur cette série. J’ai même succombé et payé pour obtenir une dédicace, même si je dois reconnaître que les prix sont un peu élevés. Après, c’est une association qui s’occupe de l’organisation donc c’est un moyen pour l’invité d’être payé. Cette année-là, j’ai également eu la chance de pouvoir prendre une photo de mon fier acolyte Mr Pingouin en compagnie de la bande de Noob, websérie que j’apprécie particulièrement et croiser au détour d’un stand des acteurs de Kaamelott, plus précisément, Bô Gaultier de Kermoal et Guillaume Briat. De même, j’ai croisé Brigitte Lecordier, doubleuse française de Son Goku. J’ai également souhaité me faire dédicacer le livre de Bruce Benamran mais suis arrivée trop tard. J’y ai également croisé de très beaux cosplays, et de manière générale, l’ambiance y est très bonne enfant bien que mercantile.

J’ai refait le TGS Springbreak cette année, donc l’édition 2018 et j’ai été quelque peu déçue car j’ai trouvé qu’il y avait moins de choses à voir et moins de personnes à rencontrer surtout. Je ne vais pas vous mentir, j’adore aller aux conventions pour rencontrer des gens que je n’aurai pas l’occasion de rencontrer autrement et cette année, à l’exception de Kayane et de Reflet d’Acide, je n’ai pas trouvé mon compte. Je n’étais peut-être pas la cible certes mais ça m’a fait bizarre quand je me suis rendue compte que je ne connaissais aucun des Youtubeurs invités. Les têtes d’affiche de cette année étaient Joe Flanigan, acteur de Stargate Atlantis (que j’ai regardé avec mon paternel également mais je ne suis pas une fan incontestée de son personnage), David Nykl, autre acteur de Stargate Atlantis et Ross Mullan, marcheur blanc de Game of Thrones. Cette édition n’était pas de moindre qualité mais j’en suis ressortie mitigée. Néanmoins, j’ai pris du plaisir à être cosplayée en Chloé Price du jeu Life is Strange et à voir des cosplays plus beaux les uns que les autres. Je pense sérieusement à m’y intéresser afin de faire mes propres cosplays. Affaire à suivre …

Ce qui nous amène au TGS de décembre. Le Toulouse Game Show ne prend pas place à Diagora mais au Parc des Expositions dans Toulouse, à proximité du stade de football (oui parce qu’il y a aussi le stade de rugby, il est important de les différencier car ils ne sont pas du tout au même endroit). Cet événement se produit sur un week-end en fin d’année généralement et est beaucoup plus grand et conséquent que le TGS Springbreak. Les invités sont généralement plus “prestigieux” mais surtout beaucoup plus nombreux. En effet, pour l’édition 2018, les premiers invités annoncés sont Don Rosa, créateur de Picsou et l’acteur Sean Bean. De même l’an dernier, on y trouvait Frankie Muniz de la série Malcolm ou encore James Marsters, acteur de Spike dans Buffy contre les Vampires. Il y avait également énormément de comédiens, de Youtubeurs, de gamers/gameuses et d’auteurs, illustrateurs en tout genre. Bref, il était facile d’y trouver son compte. J’ai même eu la chance de rencontrer Barry Kitson qui a travaillé sur différents comics comme Batman (je suis une fan inconditionnelle du chevalier noir). J’ai d’ailleurs acquis un dessin A5 du Joker, réalisé spécialement pour moi et sous mes yeux ébahis. J’ai également pu voir Maliki et Becky (et me procurer le cadeau de Noël parfait pour mon meilleur ami). Mais le monde, la promiscuité et l’effervescence ont vite rendu tout cela étouffant. Néanmoins, j’ai adoré l’espace cosplay où l’on pouvait rencontrer des cosplayeurs professionnels, des crafteurs, une porte des étoiles, les voitures de Supernatural, Retour vers le Futur et Harry Potter. De même, j’ai vraiment apprécié les stands de littérature fantasy qu’on trouvait en de nombreux endroits. C’était vraiment super de pouvoir discuter avec des auteurs, obtenir une petite dédicace et repartir avec un sac rempli de livres.

Bref, malgré la foule et quelques incivilités, je retire pas mal de positif de ces événements et c’est avec plaisir que je retournerai au TGS édition 2018. J’ai adoré être cosplayée en Chloé et être reconnue par quelques personnes même si je n’étais pas vraiment à l’aise puisque c’était la première fois. J’ai hâte d’y retourner et de voir si mon impression sur le TGS Springbreak 2018 n’était justement qu’une impression par rapport à des invités/activités qui ne me passionnaient pas.

Here is a long overdue report of my visit at Angoulême Comics Festival this year. 

I attended Angoulême Comics Festival in France for the first time this year. Angoulême is the biggest comic festival in France and one of the largest ones in Europe with an international crowd of about 200,000 people each year gathering into this small town in southwest of France.  I had heard a lot about this festival that had gone on for over forty years and was interested to see it for myself.

I was invited as a guest to the festival as part of Femicomix Finland (Feministinen sarjakuvatoiminta). Femicomix was representing at Angoulême in collaboration with three other organizations from around the world that bring awareness of gender inequality in the comic scene and bring out more female artists. These organizations were Chicago Ladies’ Night Anthology (USA), Laydeez Do Comics (UK) and Comic Book Slumber Party (UK). As a group we called ourselves “International Girl Gang”.

The Mission of International Girl Gang was to bring awareness of gender inequality in the French comic business. Last year there was a scandal at Angoulême Comics Festival because no women were nominated for the lifetime achievement award. The scandal raised a discussion internationally about the position of women in comics. Female creators do not get as much praise as the male comic creators and are often left without publishing deals. There are many great female comic artists so why did the awards not reflect it?

To bring more women in to the eyes of the public visiting Angoulême we had an exhibition at Conservatoire as part of the Angoulême Comics Festival. Many locals and people visiting the festival came to the opening party and saw the exhibition later as well. I had few pages from my graphic novel MOSS DASH exhibited there. We had a table in Espace BD Alternative where all the international artists in the Girl Gang could sell their work and meet people visiting the festival. We also publsihed a zine International Girl Gang Encyclopedia that we sold at our stall. The zine had works from all the four organizations by different artists in the groups. There was also a two page comic about impostor syndrome by me published in the zine.

We held a very popular panel discussion on how to fight sexism in comics that had a huge line before it started. We decided to have the panel two times since there were so many people wishing to hear about this topic. Speaking we representatives from each of the four groups. Johanna Rojola was representing Femicomix Finland in the panel.

We also had a seminar day at EESI with workshops and presentations from the different groups taking part in international girl Gang. I was unfortunately unable to attend this seminar. I was supposed to talk about trans and non-binary representation in comics at the seminar but on the day I got really bad food poisoning and had to spend the rest of the day puking in the toilet. My last few days were a bit of a haze of throwing up and trying to survive. Luckily I got some strong french medicine to help with my sickness and I was able to make it back to Finland without puking on the plane, bus or train.

Our table was in the alternative area comics are of the festival and I really found some interesting artists there and wonderful new styles in comics. Alternative artists as graduates from renowned ÉESI (École Européenne Supérieure de l'Image) in Angoulême were pushed aside to a Spin off Festival near by. The works at Spin Off were very artistic and inspiring. Reminded me most of the finnish comic scene that is ruled by great artists from KutiKuti for example. The comic market in Finland is very much a small niche thing and no matter what you do you will be considered a niche thing. The french comic market is very big and many international publishers head to Angoulême in hopes of cashing in on the large french speaking market.  

As a non-binary transperson I am always trying to search representation of queer themes and artists in comics. At the festival I didn’t see many queer artists. I met one trans artist stco-19 that had many great zines about trans and queer themes which I was very happy about. The publisher LGBT BD also had many comics about queer themes. I was really happy to find them as well. But that was about it. Maybe if I understood more french I could understand the comics more, now I was mostly limited to understanding the comics that were in english. The french culture is still very conservative when it comes to LGBTQIA+ issues. So for these themes to hit the mainstream and be in comics more widely might still take some time.

I saw some women creators and artists at the stalls. Still the mayority was men in the creators, publishers and sellers. The french comic scene is still very much ruled by old men making adventure comics for other men. While women make up a large portion of the comic consumers, not many comics are made by women or for women.

Overall I had a great experience. I want to give a big thank you to all of the wonderful people of International Girl Gang and to Kone Foundation for giving us funding for the trip. Hope to go to Angoulême again but not next year since I got a little bit traumatized by my food poisoning there. And it was so hard to find vegan food there. Maybe I can go back in a few years and see if things have at all improved in Angoulême in regards to gender inequality and vegan food.
