A suggestion from the poll last month, and one that I couldn’t resist. I love The Adventure Zone, and always wanted to make a map of Fantasy Costco (Where all your dreams come true, got a deal for you!) and thought it would be fun to make a version to surprise your players with next time they need to stop somewhere to resupply and spend some of that hard-earned bounty.

As promised, the interior of the Rose Inn from last month, complete with dining barrels, a gilded brass icon in the floor, and, I hope, some warm, homey vibes after spending so much time in cold dungeons in search of gold and blood.  I also, crucially, remembered to add some privies to this building, so there is no need to ask me where people go to take a dump on this one (seriously, how many of you guys are tracking your characters’ bowel movements?)

The centuries have slowly eroded and decayed this place, stone halls collapsing under thousands of pounds smooth, velvety fine sand that falls in thin trickling bursts from the cracked ceilings with each step. That dark ritual took place here, so many years ago, and why did the architects of this last resting place position traps and dangers, in addition to those made by the threat of collapsing passages? One thing is certain. The path below must be tread carefully, if one does not desire to join the occupants here, sealed below the shifting sands…

This is the Public release, patrons have access to hi res, ungridded, unwatermarked versions, a night variant, and PSD documents.

Steam and the soft sounds of sloshing water and drowsily relaxed conversation float through the large stone chamber. Large pools kept full of warm water from natural hot springs below the earth are filled with bathers relaxing, and private baths in the back are curtained off, attendants moving to and fro with pitchers of warm water, washing cloths, or towels for paying clientele.

The perfect place to relax after an adventure, or perhaps just a place to catch a well-guarded criminal or corrupt politician without the benefit of arms and armor. Let’s hope that the proprietors don’t have any plans to take advantage of a plucky group of adventurers, forcing them into combat au naturale.  This map mostly started so that I could play a prank on my players, but as I developed it, I realized it actually would be fun to change the dynamic of the party, that’s so used to putting their heavily armored fighters front and center, while the dextrous and magically gifted party contributed from behind a fighter’s heavy shield. Instead, without conventional weapons and armor, the mage’s mage armor and spells, and the rogue’s dex-based AC have even greater value.  Perhaps it will also provide your party with a night of good clean fun.

I needed a break from desert-style maps that I’ve been working on as part of the Desert Tomb series, and made something with a little more green and color involved.
Tinkering with perspective again, I wanted to tabletopify this gorgeous inn by Hyunsu Cha and got a little carried away. I’m feeling good about it.

I’d like to follow up with a map of the interior next week. Let me know your thoughts!

Rocky Ridge

My second test map for the asset pack I’ve been building this month, hopefully more comprehensive and useful for adding some verticality to your games. This is the Rocky Ridge, a sloping peak dotted with evergreens, with a small hole in the center, giving a dim peek into a grotto beneath. Time to bust out the rope and climb checks, or at least a handy featherfall scroll.

The Sleeping Giant Inn

A bit of nostalgia today, testing out some more rugged and cold-weather assets, cobblestone, and flagstone textures, I decided to put them together into the Sleeping Giant Inn from Skyrim’s Riverwood, an iconic location, with a secret base of operations. Perhaps it’ll make for an interesting roadside pit stop for you and your party members as well. Just don’t shoot the chicken.

Town Festival (Public)

The final map this month, a small town festival, whether the celebration is over a successful mission, or perhaps a more special occasion, it’s a perfect place for some socializing, or perhaps a quick and dirty ambush from those foul greenskins…

Sheer and towering cliffs on either side of this serene gulch make reaching the stream that runs through it a daunting prospect, and one would do well to watch the prancing goats that travel up the razor sharp cliffs with careful and dexterous ease.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the discord, and really liked some of the creations I’ve been seeing, especially clever utilization of rock and cliffside pieces from other maps, that some industrious members have clipped from Photoshop documents and shared. But, those weren’t quite so polished, so I’ve put together a variety of shapes and styles that can be layered on top of one another easily to add some verticality to a map, and tested them out on this simple stream.

Buildings Pack (Adventurer)

Something a few of you on the discord and instagram have been asking for, I put together some buildings packs using the new roof texture I created this month. Really, these can be scaled and shaped into whatever shape you desire, but I threw some normal, neutral sized buildings together for now. You can expect to see these in use from time to time in my maps, and I’d love to see what you all come up with over on the Dungeon Mapster discord in the Community Creations tab!

Holy City Assets (Adventurer)

This month, I’ve worked on a variety of assets for map-building, and started with some based on a location in Elden Ring, full of Greco-Roman styles I’d yet to tackle in my maps. Hopefully this map, and the 100+ items asset pack that I used to create it, will be of use in your own mapmaking endeavors!

Holy City Streets (Public)

Golden light seems to bathe this ancient stone city, that in spite of its slow decline still retains a sense of the divine inspiration upon which it was founded. Bristling with growth and the slowly fading foliage that was once so full of life and potential, much like the citizens and pilgrims that have taken residence here, to await the promised golden age, and the resurgence of faith for which this place was built.

Eastern City Street Assets (Adventurer)

Made some generic “roof” textures to make buildings easier and faster in the long run, and this is a pack of assets I’ve used to create an Eastern style city street, inspired pretty heavily from some anime I’m addicted to. Dungeondraft pack included.

Let’s see those creations in the Community Creations tab on the DungeonMapster Discord!

Eastern City Street - 27x25 (Public)

Hanging lamps and curved arches line the thoroughfare, rows of trees planted and kept guarded, interspersed through what would otherwise be a bustling market. Shoppers, merchants, and entertainers alike ply their wares, beckoning at golden-arched doorways, or waving from balconies overhead.

Basically, I’ve been watching a lot of Demon Slayer, and wanted to make some stuff reminiscent of the Entertainment District.

Ruins and Debris (Adventurer) + random assets

An asset extravaganza! I put together this pack of stone structure ruins after seeing Jon on the discord resorting to using some stonewall assets to create a ruined building in one of his maps, so I thought I could make a proper set of old ruins pieces. These were put to good use in the Ruined Residence map, and demonstrate the sort of thing you could whip up.

In addition, I’ve done some other updates/tinkering with other assets that aren’t a part of this pack properly, since I released them before, but that I thought you might find useful. The first is a selection of prefab tables, piles of cargo, and some Witcher-style butchering tables that might be more convenient for your map-building purposes than assembling them piece by piece yourselves.

The second is a set of broken tables and overturned chairs and benches, that I released awhile back, given a little update and brush up to fit my current style, which pair well with ruins and debris.

Ruined Residence (Public) 25x26

It’s been decades since this dilapidated old home came to ruin, the furnishings scattered, rusted, and destroyed. Little enough remains intact besides the old stonework, and a few decaying vestiges of roofing, sure to collapse at any moment.

More assets, more testing, more tinkering. On the discord, I noticed that some of you have been finding clever ways of using my rock-fence asset to construct stone building walls, and realized I didn’t have much in the way of ruined structures, so I put together some assets, and constructed this as a test and was happy with the way that it turned out.

I don’t really wanna become the “video game battlemap” illustration guy, but it is pretty fun to make maps and assets based on the games I love. So, here is the Kaer Morhen Courtyard, a pretty iconic location from the games, and maybe the first part in a giant ass illustration of the entire fort. I dunno, you guys tell me if it’s something you’re interested in seeing!

Residents of the snowy town of Stormnook are the only in the entire realm that pay homage not to one

Residents of the snowy town of Stormnook are the only in the entire realm that pay homage not to one ruler, but two. First, the king of the land, who collects taxes, creates laws, and sets imperial decrees. Second, and more revered among the locals, is the winner of a no-holds-barred downhill race from the peak of this tall mountain to its ticker-taped base. Each year, a new ruler is crowned, their position secured not through bloodline, but through victory.

The rules of the contest are simple. The first rider to the bottom of the trail with sled intact wins, to enjoy all the power and prestige, while the rest watch and join in as the townsfolk raise a mug of cocoa and chant in one voice, proclaiming the Monarch of the Mountain.

Kind of a goofy idea, I started testing some of the new assets I’ve been working on to see how well they worked with differing levels of elevation, and I wound up creating a snow-covered mountainside. As I went on, I started subconsciously adding challenges and turns, and realized that while this map works just fine as a mountainside battlemap, it could also work for a little snowy skill-challenge race between players.
