Did you ever add anything of your own to your Doctor’s costume?
The very first pair of shoes that I wore were my own shoes, because I wanted them to be old and battered and hanging off my feet. And one thing that costume designers - and Louise Page is a fantastic costume designer - but costume designers hate things being really knackered. And I really wanted them to be scruffy and knackered and hanging off, so I just got my own shoes and said, “I’m just going to wear these.” And the soles were literally flapping.
You’re not painting a great picture of your own personal hygiene
They were very old. They were very old shoes. But they really did fall apart, so I think I wear them in maybe two stories: I wear them in “The Christmas Invasion” and a bit of “School Reunion” and then they fell apart.
Have you still got them?
No, we sold them for Children in Need. So somebody’s got an old pair of shoes rotting in the corner of their bedroom somewhere.
What’s your relationship like with Matt Smith? Do you kind of lock the door and leave and then he goes it? You guys were on the set together a couple of times for the last episode.
We’ve met. I’ve chatted to him several times. He was down in Cardiff doing a ‘recce’ and we had a good old chat. It’s weird because I’m very excited for him, at and the same time I don’t want to get in his way. He’s enthused and clearly going to be brilliant. He’s such a talent, there is nobody in the UK who’s worked with him who doesn’t rave about him. Nothing but praise to lavish. He doesn’t need any advice. Doctor Who is a big thing in Britain, there are very few television shows where you get that attention, some of which is nice and some that’s intrusive. But he’ll cope. He’s bright, normal, and down to earth.
