Questlove will co-executive produce an upcoming Broadway musical based on Soul Train, the iconic music variety program that aired from 1971 to 2006. The play, tentatively slated to arrive in 2021 to honor the TV series’ 50th anniversary, will trace the personal story of Soul Train host and creator Don Cornelius, Deadlinereports.

Playwright Dominique Morisseau, director Kamilah Forbes and choreographer Camille A. Brown will all participate in the project. Questlove will executive produce alongside Cornelius’ son Tony, CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker (in his Broadway debut) and Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee.[X]

TheRoundabout Theatre Company is presenting two high-profile revivals to its new season. First up is Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama A Soldier’s Play.Directed by Kenny Leon, the production will star David Alan Grier and Blair Underwood. It will begin preview performances on December 27 and officially open at the American Airlines Theatre on January 21, 2020. The company will also produce the first Broadway revival of Caroline, or Change, Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner’s acclaimed 2004 Tony-nominated musical collaboration. This transfer of director Michael Longhurst’s 2019 Olivier-nominated staging will feature star Sharon D. Clarke reprising her Olivier-winning performance in the title role. Previews will begin on March 13 ahead of an April 7 opening night at Studio 54. [X]

Alex Newell (Once on the Island, Glee) and the Sounds of Zamar came together recently for a moving rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been,” from Hairspray. AIDS Walk New York posted the video on its YouTube channel after postponing its “Live at Home” event yesterday “in response to the murder of George Floyd, the systemic racism it reflects, the ongoing police abuses, and in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.” Hairspray co-writer Marc Shaiman lent his keyboard to the rousing tribute.
