Here’s A List of Things I Was Terrified of When I Went Natural in Aug. 2013

  • That my mainly 4A hair wasn’t pretty like all the natural gals I saw all over my tumblr and twitter timelines. I felt out of place.
  • That Natasha (the name of my hair, thankyouverymuch) wouldn’t grow fast enough and I would be inches away from being a bald headed scalawag basically for forever
  • That Natasha would be boring and that it would be hard to try new styles
  • That I would miss perms and eventually feel like I had chopped off my hair for nothing

The first few months were miserable. Using overpriced natural products in pretty bottles, exasperated that my curls didn’t come through the way I wanted them to. I had to learn how to moisturize and detangle, how to style and how to dye. Plus I often felt less feminine because I was so used to long weaves (which I still occasionally rock, not gonna lie). BUT, almost two years later and I can proudly say that going natural was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only is my hair healthy, but it is LONGER than it has ever been. Natasha’s curls, though not always appreciated in natural hair posts and oft overlooked for softer and more elongated ones, are perfect. I love my hair. I have found an abundance of ways to style it- puffballs, curl definition fros, mohawks, twistouts, creatively placed scarves, bantu knots, etc. I know how to tame it, I know how to get in and out. I wouldnt trade my 4a curls for anything. I will never go back to perms. S/o to all the category 4 gals and girls with so many textures that categorizing is laughable. Love your hair, ladies.
