After figuring out Merv’s design, I really wanted to draw something with a more dynamic composition, since I need practice in that. So, I decided to draw Azza and Merv’s first mercenary gig together, fighting a juvenile Displacer Beast that had been terrorizing a nearby barracks.

Still needs some work, particularly with foreshortening, but all in all, I think it ended up pretty cool.

I made up this guy a while back and put him on Azariel’s character sheet a while back, but now I finally got around to actually drawing him!

This is Mervin Etchingham, Merv for short. He’s a half-orc mercenary that often finds himself on the same merc gigs as my Tiefling Barbarian Azariel. As a result, she and Merv have a very close, forged-in-fire bond that tends to result in romance whenever they reunite. However, neither of them feel ready to settle down yet, so they see their romance as rather casual. The tooth around his neck is that of a juvenile Displacer Beast, a souvenir of the first gig they handled together. Azza has its twin.

Looking past his rough orcish features, Merv actually prides himself on his charismatic and eloquent personality, often waxing poetic or penning prose, as well as showering Azza with sweet flowery nothings that he works very hard on. He is happy to bust heads, sure, but his true dream in life is to become a great thespian someday, pouring his heart out in heroic roles and writing the next great drama. Unfortunately, when he tries out, he tends to be typecast as brigands and mercenaries, or worse, relegated to heavy lifting. Despite these shortcomings, he always has a smile and a playwright’s wit for those who would call him friend.

A few concept doodles of a character I had a campaign idea for.

This is Barney. He’s a ten-year-old lich who’s been that way for…a very long time. He’s a rather unconventional lich, not just because he is a child, but also because he did not do this to himself, and while other liches keep their phylacteries far away and hidden, his is laced into his very flesh, and cannot be removed without him dying and respawning.

Barney remembers very little of what happened to him to make him this way, something not helped by the fact that he has died more than a few times in his wanderings, each time his body growing back around his amulet.

That being said, he is a very shy, sweet-natured boy when one can get around his rather ghoulish appearance, and all he wants is for someone to help him find his way back home and a way to break his curse.

Happy Halloween! To celebrate, I decided to draw my little skeleton girl OC Gilda, getting dressed up for trick-or-treating as characters from things I loved this month. :-)

Seeing@modmad posting older, but still really nice art reminded me that I have this photo album sitting around in my closet full of all the doodles I did in class while I was in college a few years ago. I can certainly see in some doodles that I have greatly improved, but even then, there are quite a few doodles that I am still super proud of! Since Mod inspired this fond look-back, here’s a few Property of Hate doodles that I did. You can tell these were done in really boring lectures, since they ended up shaded and detailed. :-)

Hope you feel better soon, @modmad!
