My favorite ship dynamic is “they’re both extremely stupid in completely different ways and extremely smart in completely different ways, but rarely is any of that useful because they just get extra double stupid when together”
Brad, throughout their entire relationship, never stops internally panicking when he does something that makes Ray upset. He apologizes verbally. He apologizes physically. He may look calm and indifferent like everything is normal again… But for hours afterwards his heart is hammering, his hands are clammy, he watches Ray for signs of still being upset. Biggest of all, his mind spins all sorts of scenarios where Ray leaves him.
Ray, in between his Afghanistan deployment and his first OIF deployment, was a nightmare. He was this little social butterfly that got Brad roped into so many fucked up and awkward situations, some so bad to the point that Brad had to bodily remove him from the conversation, conversations which Ray had no clue were awkward. He’s fuckin’ 19 for fucks sake, dude has no brain-to-mouth filter, no personal space, no idea when to shut the fuck up; and then this giant, stone-faced, Man quite literally grabs Ray and verbally warns Ray that he’s about to pull him out of the building by his scruff if he doesn’t stop scaring civilians. Ray doesn’t stop. Brad does what he needs to.
Now after their first deployment in Iraq, Ray is withdrawn physically, mentally, and emotionally. No exuberant rants, no oddly long touches, no bright doe-eyes, he’s a 22 year old acting like he couldn’t care less about the remainder of his life. Brad doesn’t know what to do, he tried waiting it out with Ray for a long while. Then he tried asking Ray if he wants to set up an appointment with a therapist, it ended with Ray nearly screaming at him which, sadly, was the liveliest Brad had seen Ray in weeks. All Brad knew was that Ray either needed pull a fuck-load of strings to get out of the Corps before their next deployment, or get help so that his head was right before he was back in a regular Recon setting.
It was stupid, it was a stupid thought, Brad should have never looked at Ray’s reaction to the subject of therapy that way and it probably shouldn’t have worked as well as it did. But it worked. On a particularly hot California day, Brad cleared a 20′x20′ section in the middle of his backyard, bought a wrestling mat to fit the area, and promptly shoved Ray into the center of it and prepared himself for a flurry of tiny, sharp fists and kicks and elbows and knees to fully connect with his body any second. Ray just looked at him for a bit, analyzing the situation, feeling for any hesitance from Brad, and when he found none, he lunged. Afterwards, they lay panting on the sweat slicked, sun heated mat. Ray looks over at his opponent, smiling with a new life in his eye, “Thanks.”
anyone who can look me in the eye and tell me brad wants ray to shut up/stop talking (beyond when ray’s saying something REALLY stupid to reporter or brad’s stressed/unwell) is clearly watching a different show to me.
brad the kinda guy to listen to every word out of ray’s mouth even if he thinks it’s fucking stupid, and remember the shit he says. he literally notices and is concerned when ray stops talking because of the ripped fuel.
